engine hours counter.

Hello folks at the moment I'm making a log of engine hours but sure I've miss counted a couple of times.What and how do you fit a engine counter I'm sure there must be a few different ways.The engine is a perkins perama 30 with the usual electrics please don't say keep a better count.

Hour meters just count the time the ignition is on. So connect the meter to a live supply that is only on with the ignition on.

No not that - its an hour counter to be used to replace the type that sits in a rev counter.

If you get an electronic hour meter wire its positive feed in to the negative (sensor ) side of the oil pressure light. When the ignition is on but the engine is not running the oil pressure sensor shorts out the hour meter so it does not run. When the oil pressure comes off the bottom the switch opens, and the light drags the hour meter up to 12v. There is not enough load in the hour meter to light the oil pressure idiot light. But if you leave the ignition on you are not racking up non existent engine hours.

I've just fitted an rs185-7087 @£19.00. Their technical dept. tell me to wire positive to terminal 1, negative to 2 and positive after the ignition switch to terminal 3 so that 3 is only activated when the ignition is on. Should do the trick. I just found space within the control box to fit it.

+1- most ignition systems sound a v noisy alarm if switched on or engine stop lever pulled out- ours does

True - but I think the likelihood of needing to is not high.
I'm fitting it inside the boat anyway not at the helm. Near the engine.
It's not a twin engined mobo, one of them is for a friend whose VP hourmeter has packed up same as mine!

I fitted one of these just on the ignition circuit on the basis that it would overread slightly but only by the amount of time it would take me to leap (?) across the cockpit to silence the shriek from the alarms. There are other ways to wire them but not worth the extra complication IMO.

Have you considered a tiny tach? Works fine for me, was cheap and dead easy to fit.
