Engine hour counter died

Yanmar 4jh engine, hour counter on the panel worked fine last autumn but this year the digital counter is blank. Any tips as to what might cause the blank screen?

The display has deteriorated. There are dozens of threads on here about why it has happened, what can sometimes be done short term and what needs to be done long term, to remedy it.

I added an hour meter and wired to the ignition switch. Not expensive, fitted in engine bay, with note to say hours before fitting. The original Beta hour meter was badly faded and only visible in certain light and angle.

I'd hang fire a bit, it might come back to life if we get some warm, dry weather (apparently there is some on the way!) but yes a replacement can be had for not much money...

Not that difficult to fit the replacement LCD from AK Speedo. They have a video on their website.

Good luck with that, usually once its gone its gone.
A set of jewellers screwdrivers is helpful and depending on your eyesight a pair of these from ebay for about a Fiver.

I'd also hang on for a bit. Ours have hardly shown anything for almost 2 years and in the last month have sprung into life again! I just take a photo when they do work to keep a secondary datum point for a manual log

Mine failed at 6 yrs/300 hours. If you don’t fancy DIY, for not a lot more than the kit the guy at AK Speedo will do it for you. Turnaround time was just a couple of days.

Failure of the hour meter is very common and threads appear on YBW regularly. I penned a polite note to both Yanmar and Beneteau to ask them to consider improving its durability. Unsurprisingly, neither had the courtesy to respond.

I confess that I have succumbed to that easy option. I've watched the video and the skills required do not play to my skill set. I'm more of a big hammer man....... So a trip to Stirling next week to have it fixed. Yes I'm a wuss/numpty or any other derogatory adjective which is considered appropriate for such abysmal failure on my part.....

I’m sure that you/we could have done it, eventually? but I, too, felt much happier giving it to someone who has done it hundreds of times. I don’t see it as failure, more as prudence ?

Hi all, has anyone been able to find a replacement lcd for a yanmar b20 series instrument panel? Everything I’ve found so far is for the B-type panels but I have the same fading issue in the B20 lcd screen (seems to be larger than the b type lcd sadly). Thanks!

Have a chat with Keith at AK Speedo, Stirling. He fixed ours very quickly for low cost.

Lots on here about replacing LCD displays.

I have a Garmin 172C and a couple of years ago the screen went tottally unreadeable.

You just take the unit apart, peel of the old POLARIZING FILM, and fit ne polarizing film.

Film is very cheap, rechargeable 3v battery was more expensive.

I like to keeep equipement going as long as i can.

This garmin 172c now has a wired in external ariel, as the internal one stopped working.

I also has the latest firmware updates that i could get hold off, i have lots of time on my hands!

Attempting to update a garmin 72 gps, nightmare!
