Engine has delay to get to full revs when hot.

My Bukh DV20 starts and runs well,but when coming into my berth,I give full astern from idle,to stop the boat, it hesitates for few seconds before it reaches full revs.It does the same in fwd. It only happens when the engine is hot. It reaches and maintains maximum speed when motoring without issues. I'm thinking of inadequate air in the engine compartment ? I have tried cleaning the air filter as it is just a wire mesh. Any other possible causes to look at?

From your description of the symptoms I would be chasing fuel supply issues.

Thanks Vyv, I'll temporarily change the fuel hoses to clear hose,to check for air bubbles.
