There I was setting out on what should have been a fantastic weekend when all of a sudden three hundred yards from my mooring my outboard cut out.It was so sudden that I thought I must have run into a rock or a bit of rope had wrapped around the propeller or I had hit a buoy or something.
When I had sailed off the lee shore (fortunately I had the sails up) & got out of danger I tried to start the engine but although it seemed to fire a couple of times & almost run no joy & I knew continued pulling would just flood it so I continued on around to a favorite stop off place & decided to spend the weekend there.
On closer inspection I found that there was no spark whatsoever:confused:
Any ideas?

PS: by the way it's a two cylinder two stroke Mercury 9.9 hp.

No Spark

Only thing I can suggest at the moment , Without looking at it , Is to check all the leads including the emergency stop and plug cap . Possible connection vibrated loose after new stator . Sorry I cannot be more helpful .

If there is no spark on either plug, it has to be something common to both. My first check would be the kill switch, see if you can disconnect the wires from the switch somewhere inside the hood.

Check the kill button and the wiring... it would be silly to overlook something as basic as that shorting out.

you dont give the serial number or the year of maufacture so cannot look up any details with certainty

The most likely thing is the CD unit.. ( ouch, thats $180 oem price in the USA $111 for the Sierra part but don't know how you'd get that in the UK))

Other bits common to both cylinders are not so likely to be at fault.

Check all wiring for defects/bad connections

Thanks for all your help.I too suspected the kill switch & now with so many similar opinions I shall definitely try to disconnect it.

The serial number is 09600225 & I have owned it for ten years having bought it second hand Vic.I did try to find out the age before but just drew a blank.

I don't mind paying a hundred odd quid if only I can do the job myself.....last time I wrestled the brute on & off the stern myself into a 6/7' dinghy & damaged my hand:(

Serial numbers in the range 9586000 - 9629999 are 1990 Belgium made models

You should be able to down load an owners manual from the Download Center tab HERE If you do not have one

Parts lists and diagrams HERE

Thanks Vic.I came up with the Belgium made statistic but was under the impression that my position in that serial range related to a greater number of years than just 1990......something like between 1990 & 1998 which would put mine in about the middle, somewhere about 1995 but it dos'nt really matter because now I have fixed it.Yahoo!:)
Have a service manual & went down my boat yesterday......isolated the lanyard type safety switch at the switch panel plus the stop button at the end of the tiller arm & bingo a spark & the engine ran perfectly.
Then isolated the lanyard type switch & thankfully it continued to run so I still have the cut out.Drinks all round in the virtual pub,I'm buying.Thanks.;)

Its a 1990 model!

In 1991 the numbers ran from 9630000 - 9682499

and by the time you get to 1995 they are 09831600 - 09881099

1988 from 09973100 but changes to a different format with 1999 starting at 0P017000

That's a relief you have fixed it and not needed to fork out a couple of hundred noes for a new CD "switch box"

OK Vic I will take your word for it,got to admit that I just found the whole matter confusing.Thanks.
By the way you know what really bugs me........I had a suspicion that there was something dodgy about that switch about a year ago & did'nt do anything about it........I missed a wonderful trip as a consequence
