Hi guys,
That time of year again.....
Can anyone recommend me

1) Engine oil to use on the KAD32?
2) Gear-oil for the 290DP?

I had all this info stored on the laptop before it got destroyed (with it's backup /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif)

I remember using Halfords oil last year for the engine, which is re-branded Esso oil which is of adequite quality (so i've been told) - I just can't remember what type. Would it have been a 10w/40 Semi-Synthetic?

As for the gearoil, last 290DP I had I used a Castrol gearoil which seemed to work fine - Again, can't remember which. However, I remember the Volvo manual recommending Volvo oil (Of course it would recommend it's own oil!) - However, is this crucial? For example, I only use the Volvo oil for the Supercharger, so should I be doing the same for the gearbox?

Many thanks folks!

I would say stick to the specs, which sounds easy, but isn't. I'm sure you'll get replies on here that will say "Any Old 15/40 will do".

Specs on the engine oil are:
15W/40
ACEA E5 or ACEA E7
API CH-4 or API CI-4
VDS-2 or VDS-3

The last bit is important:
"VDS" is the drain specification, i.e. how long you can keep the oil in your engine, despite not using it for weeks at a time.

"Castrol Tection" or "Castron Tection Global" are examples of alternatives to the Volvo oil. It's in their "truck/bus" range of products. Also Mobil Delvac MX.

The gear oil is more generic:
75W/90
API GL-5
Synthetic
Again, the sort of thing you could get from a truck dealer (e.g. Castrol / Mobil).

Bottom line is: look for bus/truck equivalents, not car oils!

I've got ad31p's, basicaly KAD32'c without the supercharger. For the engine I just walk into Halfords and buy the 15/40 turbo diesel stuff, its the right spec and not expensive. For the drive however I would only buy the Volvo fully synthetic stuff, yes you can buy an equivelant gear oil but the volvo stuff has an additive to allow it to keep its lubricating properties if water gets in the leg. Unlike the engine you can only check on the state of your leg oil, when the boat comes out maybe once a year. So it could have water in there for a year doing its worse. I found one leg had gone milky this year, but no harm done because the oil was still working despite being contaminated. Its a bit more expensive but not much given how crucial a job it has to do.

It is important to have "long drain" or "slow drain" oil in your engine.
The 15/40 bit is just its "thickness" i would go for the proper spec as sugested by S28
Do you want to screw your engine for the sake of a few quid?
Volspec sell it for £14.95 per 5L

I agree I bought the right one in Halfords, maybe it was the 5/40 part synthetic I can't remember. Important thing is to change it reguarly and use the boat, however I think its rare for engines to actualy wear out, especialy due to the wrong oil. Most problems are related to rotten ancillarie's it would take years to trash an engine with the wrong oil. However a drive can be ruined in weeks.

...but you do hear stories where an older engine has "dropped a valve". Why did that valve drop? What was holding it there before? Did something snap, or just wear away over time?

Hi
If it helps, I just bought 20 litres of Volvo VDS2 oil for our KAD32's from our local Volvo Truck Centre £59.69 including VAT.

Also here are some equivalents for filters etc compiled from posters on the forum (Peanuts, Castanet and others)
KAD 32 bits

Power steering Belt - Volvo No. 973487
Car shop - 6375MC or MBF1013

Alternator Belt - Volvo No. 977542
Car shop - 6469MC or MMB987

Primary Belt - Volvo No. 861564
Car shop - 7PK925 78359 or MMR7925

Compressor Belt - Volvo No.3581460
Car shop - 68376 6PK1138 or MMR61150

Air Filter - Volvo No.463505
Car shop - Champion U531 (As used in 240 1.7DL.GL B17A 1979 onwards)

FRAM Filters
air CA4365,
oil PH 2861B ,
diesel P5770.

From Volvo Truck Centre 5 Litres coolant Volvo part No 1089238

The reason engines drop a valve is usually from not following the service schedule and adjusting the valves.
If a valve has too much slack the cam follower doesn't follow the cam profile smoothly, but instead it falls off the cam lobe allowing the valve to close with a bang which over time stretches the neck of the valve just behind the head until it snaps off with fatigue.
This has been a problem on certain boats where access is difficult and the mechanic didn't bother to do the valves, as a well known boat mag found out a couple of years ago with their own boat, they got Volvo to stump up for new heads as they had paid for a full service and had the reciept to prove it, no doubt the dealer got a well deserved b*ll*king!

Thank's a lot guys - I h ad no intention on skimping on price for oils. The problem in Ireland is that I pretty much have to order everything online - And since I have a full service kit bought since last year (apart from oils) it would be handy to get the oils locally if possible

I'll check where my nearest Volvo truck centre is - Thanks for the info guys

Ah yes, this is the list that I had, very handy, thanks for posting it. When you give an alternative Car Shop product number, whats the manufacturer... ie...

"Alternator Belt - Volvo No. 977542
Car shop - 6469MC or MMB987"

What's the manufacturer of this belt when I go into the Car Shop? If I go in and just say "Belt no. 6469MC" i'll get a look that could kill me! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Alt,
I buy all my Volvo parts from Craigs in Belfast .They deliver quite reasonably to Waterford & Know there stuff.

Hi Celtic_Mist!

Do you order genuine marine volvo parts (ie. belts) or the alternatives as quoted above? I just don't know what brand to ask for when asking for a spurious belt??

The only ones I have bought myself are the Fram filters. I think the Carshop references came from Castanet who bought stuff locally.
I would reckon a good motor factor would recognise the manufacturer from the format of the part nos though.

Try asking - if we get no reply we'll assume you got the killer look!

Yes Craigs in Belfast are Volvo Agents. I always order Volvo Belts /Oil filters /Air filters /Crankcase filters etc & Just buy Fram Fuel filters at my local truck center .
If you go to a truck center up your way & give them your engine model they should be able to sort you out for some cheaper filters / belts etc . If they don't get anywhere with your engine model give them the volvo part numbers & that should cross match with there brands .

Gotcha - So if I go up with the Marina Volvo part number (Say for alternator belt), they will have the equivilent truck belt number? (At a Volvo truck centre that is)

Yup thats it .
You generally don't have to go to a Volvo truck centre though .
I go to a Daf centre & they have everything i need after i buy what i want from volvo

Nice one, will give it a shot on the weekend for some spare belts.

Still not convinced what to do about the oil though? IMHO I reckon the Halfords oil is fine as it meets the required specs - The gearoil i'm not so sure on - Can anyone give a definitive answer on gearoil alternatives for the 290DP?

Alt,
I use 15w 40 for my volvo's. I just buy 40 litre drums from my local oil supplier .I think it's Esso/ Mobil which i have been using for the past 5 years .
Not to sure on the outdrive oil ,But i would suggest using something like volvo as it's under the water & out of sight

Hi

Here we are again. I see you have the list of belts/filters from Rin, this is all I use.
Regarding the oils, I use oils supplied by a local dealer CPL, they are national suppliers. The one for my KAD32's is Turbomaster 15W/40, last cost £30 for 20L and for the outdrives Fuchs Silktran syn. 75W90, this was about £75 for 25L.
I hope this is of some help.

Steve
