Engine & Gear-oil for KAD32 / 290DP - Which?

[ QUOTE ]
Can anyone give a definitive answer on gearoil alternatives for the 290DP?

[/ QUOTE ] Why not use the oil specified in the OWNERS MANUAL Page 82 for engine oil, except that the CD spec is obsolete, CF, or better, being the current spec and page 83 for the gearbox oil

I would say stick to the specs, which sounds easy, but isn't. I'm sure you'll get replies on here that will say "Any Old 15/40 will do".

Specs on the engine oil are:
15W/40
ACEA E5 or ACEA E7
API CH-4 or API CI-4
VDS-2 or VDS-3

The last bit is important:
"VDS" is the drain specification, i.e. how long you can keep the oil in your engine, despite not using it for weeks at a time.

Mmmm, well. So in fact, what Volvo have done is to correctly publish the fact that their oil conforms to the appropriate specs (ACEA and API), but then add their own one as well. Oddly, I can't see anyone else testing their oil to ensure it conforms to VDS, given that that particular acronym stands for "Volvo Drain Specification"...

Look, you're out of warranty so using Volvo oil doesn't make a bit of difference as long as a) you use stuff that meets or exceeds the ACEA and API specs, and b) you stay on top of the maintenance.

In the offical Volvo Penta workshop manual version BC2(0) it merely states that the oil should be

Oil quality API GL5
Viscosity SAE90 or 80/90.
With the footnote Synthetic Oil 75W/90 is recommended for commercial duty.

In the earlier 280 it recommends basicaly to use what ever is in the engine itself.
ie. 10/40 or whatever.
One assumes that the basic oil is best for leisure boats as Volvo must be well aware that they will be lying idle for 99% of the year and the synthetic is only any use for boats being used day in day out.

My outdrive workshop manual covers drives up to DP-C, and it is as you say.

My KAD32/DP-E owners manual is a later publication (2002).
Page 74, "DP Drive":
API GL5
SAE 75W/90 (Fully Synthetic)

On the other hand just pop down to Halfords and pick up whatever happens to be on special offer this month!
I'm sure it will be fine.
"It's all the same stuff anyway"
"The test was thought up on a Golf Course"
"OEM specs are all a cunning scam by engine manufacturers"

I'm fairly certain this is not a question that I'm going to answer in the future /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

S28 - Thanks for that, however please don't be gettin narky on my thread - I *always* find your posts valuable - leave the crankyness to the 'experts' /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Now gentlemen, while we're at it... coolant. Someone told me (or did I read?) before that Volvo coolant MUST be used because of a certain blahblah blah and that using different coolant may cause the engine to overheat... any truth in this? Current stuff in the engine is the Volvo stuff - if it's what's needed then of course i'm going to use it, it's just the hassle of mail ordering it.

Opinions?

Hi again folks /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Popped into Halfords for a look as it's the only factors around here.

They have:
1) Halfords Gear-Oil, 75w/90 GL5 Part-Synthetic
2) Castrol Driveline Syntrax SAE 75w/90 API GL4/GL5 (Doesn't say if it's fully synthetic or semi)

Anyone got an opinon on this? If they're not suitable i'm just going to get onto a Marine dealer in the UK and have some gearoil posted over to Ireland

Thanks!

My AQD40A,s have been running on something I bought from the local motor factor at around £7.00 per 4.5 litres.Think the water to AF ratio is fairly low .....
50% or similar perhaps ?
Total capacity is about 5 gallons.
