engine for nelson 34?

Hi, i fitted a perkins 4236 to my nelson 34 as planned to do the french canals ( didnt need great speed), but ended up just doing a crossing to northern Brittany and back that took 19hrs each way! I now plan to fit a bigger engine to get some more speed! Problem is i have a width of only 22 inches between bulkheads, and didnt want to cut them up, anyone advise a bigger engine that is not too wide please?Also with a narrow sump, as dont really want to replace engine beds. Think they originaly had a 110hp, ( a 6354) but know this wont fit without cutting up the longitudinal bulkheads. ( did have a 24 inch gap for engine originaly but replaced them and glassed them in with a thick layer of glass. thanks
 
Hi thanks for the replies! My fuel tanks are only 2 x 90 litres, so guess will have to get bigger ones! Cant afford a new engine, or a newish one! Is only a single screw nelson, just want to make the most of her semi displacement capabilities, saw some good vids on youtube have a look at this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywifFugNDus
 
never heard of them? how many hp? Think nelsons were built with 110 hp perkins in them, so guess that would get them up on the plane ..ish! someone told me single screws can take max 250hp?? Looking for something around 120hp i guess. Just got a new aquadrive for the 4236 (85hp), will now need to fork out for a bigger one and new mounts i guess! :(
 
Thanks, is it narrower than the 6354? would like something that would be about the same size as the 4236?

So, you extensively modified your boat to do the French canals, eventually got over to France, but did not go into the canals, you then came back and have decided to change your plans/ boat again, might be a good idea to sleep on it for a little while before you make your next move.

Thanks for the reply. I didnt extensively modify the boat, but rebuilt it with the intention to do the canals. It took me so long to get over and will probably go back in a better season, so if i had a bigger engine perhaps would be better. Is my first boat, so possibly didnt get things right fitting a smaller engine but still a little unsure if its worth the hassle and expense to get a bigger one. It took 60 litres of diesel with my 4236, know a bigger one will be more expensive. Yes will sleep on it a bit, but nice to know my options!
 
dont no the hp of the turbo..
mi dad's boat as a pair of 4326's init i remember he enquired years ago with perkins about turbo charging them.i remember them saying it was a different crank shaft in the turbo modle,so would'nt be that straight forward to do.prob to drop the compresstion .
would be easier just to get an allready turbo'd engine.
the non turbo are 75shp so i would think the turbo would be around the 100shp.

was thinking more of marinising a turbo 4236 than trying to turbochage mine. But think the turbo is in the way so no space for the heat exchanger. Is probably a no go. Think the 4236 is 85hp (67kw) by memory, not 100% sure. Cheers
 
the 75 shp is shaft hp.. so would the engine hp would be a little higher.
still if you couldwork around the turbo...you would have the only marinised 4236 turbo..around.
