Engine descaling

Engines due for a service, which will include flushing the raw water circuit. I normally use Rydlyme, but these engines are big and Rydlyme isn't cheap.

Considering Bostik brick acid, which is apparently 16% HCL. What would be a sensible mixing ratio ?

Any other alternatives ?
Hi, any problems experienced with flushing your engines through with HCL brick cleaner since you did it in January 2024?

I was going to use Rydlyme but once again it is unavailable.

No issues here, i did run the engine for 20-30 mins afterwards to make sure they were clear of acid. Just be sure your cooling system doesn't contain anything that could be affected.

Thanks. I can't find any Rydlyme Marine and the supplier I last bought from, M K Marine, say they have had it on order for 6 months!

How often do you run a flush? Is it a yearly thing or just when you think it is needed.
No idea. Remove the exhaust injection bend and see how clear the water injection pipe bore is to get some idea of build-up? However, based on limited experience, now I have a dedicated pair of hoses and a little 12v bilge pump, it is a relatively simple job to repeat, so I have decided to do it every 5 or 6 years.

Have bought a litre of Rydlyme Marine for my Beta 25. A couple of questions or so:

1. How much to dilute if any? Manufacturer FAQs say use between 25% and 100% strength.
2. How would I know what capacity the raw water system is?
3. How would I know when whatever I tip in via the strainer (lid off) has occupied the whole raw water system?
4. How long to leave in there before flushing out by running engine normally?

One other question: is it worth when putting the boat away after use (anything for a week or so up to several months over winter) closing the raw water intake seacock and running several litres of fresh water through via the strainer?

The instructions are here https://rydlymemarine.com/wp-conten...LYME-Marine-Inboard-Cleaning-Instructions.pdf which will answer most of your questions. No idea of the volume of the raw water circuit but not that critical, maybe assume 2 litres?
