Engine cam belt change?

Perkins 4.236 marine diesel. Installed 1996. Solid and reliable currently.

What’s your views on changing the cam belt and anything else internally as a matter of maintenance now it’s over 25 years old?

Not being familiar with this unit I first check does it have one and then check what does book say regarding doing it

No timing belt on the 4.236, it's all gear driven OHV

I agree with Paul: your Perkins 4 236 has a gear driven cam shaft.

We can be sure of that because if it had a timing belt it would have snapped within a couple of years and destroyed the motor.

As aready said it has a gear driven camshaft and the valves are operated by push rods and rockers,

Remember the Ford 1600 engines in the Cortina / Capri series ....... if belt was not changed at recc'd interval - it was highly likely to let go with catastrophic results to piston crowns etc.
The 2000 engine of course was slightly longer stroke and if belt let go - pistons didn't get hit.

I knew a number of 1600 owners who had it happen ....
