I did it last summer. Was reasonably straighforward although I had to be very careful when installing the manual activation cable.
I saw some extinguishers at the boat show that looked interesting - smaller and simpler to fit. Worked on an aerosol principle. But can't remember the make.
I ended up taking the two halon extinguishers out of the engine bay on my F33 and replaced them with a single unit that was also operated by a "bulb".
Bought the unit from a local extinguisher company in Birmingham. Cost around £150 from memory for a 2 KG unit based on a halon replacement gas.
One of those things thats good to have, but you hope never to use it!
I am going through a similar thought process as have to relace Halon for BSS certificate. I have looked at 3 different types. An Automatic, Dry Powder at £49.95, but have heard horror clean up stories after it accidentaly went off.
So have now decided on either a GTFE 1500 (Halon Replacement) at £169.95, automatic and operated by temp Just undo Halon and clip in newone (-no wiring) or the fancy Seafire FM200 at £199.95. It is similar to other (automatic) but had a warning light you can fix on Dash.
I do not know which way to go so would appreciate input also,
GTFE is the more powerful at extinguishing a fire and less likely to kill you and your engine if it goes off accidentally and you are on the move or if you break the glass while in your engine bay.

Paul, good idea to replace illegal extinguisher, but we don't police or enforce that law, so it's not for us. Neither do we consider or examine fixed installation extinguishers eg engine bay. All we cover is portable extinguishers
Have a quick read of Chapter Six of the BSS Essential Guide (2005) for further explanation. Oh you might also want to take a read through of Chapter One for the explanation of all the colours and boxes.
That clarifies it. I was a little confused but also thought it sensible to replace them as I do not wish to break the law. Thanks again for your help, the whole manual (minus LPG) has been printed out and highlighted.
an excellent replacement for the Halon 1301 systems is an aerosol system. MCA approved Kits are available to 24 meters here http://www.pyrogen.com/marine01.htm
