engine alignment

I have heard that engine alignment to the shaft can be accomplished using a sheet of paper, has anyone heard of this being done and what is the procedure?

I would imagine that the paper is a cheap replacement for a feeler gauge, with the advantage of being able to see clearly the difference in the mating faces of the couplings.
Kelvin Marine engines that were popular with inshore fishermen recommended that the tappets be set to " the thickness of two visiting cards", so the use of a bit of paper is not a new idea, good luck
