I've got a Tohatsu, 2-stroke outboard, 70hp and it has totally seized up. It has not been running for at least 18 months. The flywheel is locked solid - can anyone give me advice on how to free it up/ strip it down? I'm guessing it will be a lot of work

Many Thanks in advance

You could try taking out the plugs and poring some diesel into the bores(not too much) and leaving for a day or two, then try turning the engine over,if it frees up pore some 2T oil in and turn over some more, then have a pop at starting it!! if this does not work, then is the time to think abouit extensive stripping and reconditioning.!

Ah, but which bit has siezed??

Do you know if the block or the gearbox has siezed? Even if its out of gear (neutral) and the gearbox has leaked water from the pump (as they do!) on its last run, you won't be able to crank it over. Drop the leg so that the drive shaft just clears the crank, and if you can spin the motor, then you have your answer. I'm dragging my memory here but I think the Tohatsu 70HP block is actually a Yamaha, and as such should be bullet proof. Cant see why the block would sieze for no real reason, err, unless of course, the last user siezed it??

If you need more on how to drop the drive leg, then pm me, or reply to this post.

Good luck.

That's a fair point Dave, I should have said at least try in neutral, but it's been a long hard weekend and I'm tired!!!
When are you up North next ?? I have got a trip to Phwelli coming up soon.
