Thought I would let you know that one of Britains oldest Chandlers said that they were closing up today. Marquand Bros who have been open since 1802 as chandlers are now closing their doors as the sons in the family do not want to run the business.

Just for your info Marquands are the ones opposite the Victoria Marina in full view of the visitors berths.

Shame its turning into a clothes shop and not being taken ovr as a chandlers. Some of the documents there show te rent as being 8 groats of wheat per year so when weat was sarce it was expensive rent and when weat was in supply the rent was cheap. Yuo will now have to use Boatworks + or Seaquest near the market.

Dom,

Why don't you buy the business and run it as part of your Guernsey empire? It's a long walk to Boatworks!

Dom,

Its a real shame when that happens. Its perhaps more understandable when a business closes due to poor trading conditions, but when a viable (I assume it was viable) business closes because someone isn't interested, then its just a waste.

Yet another over-priced "marine" or "outdoor" clothing shop for those that have never set foot on a boat, or outdoors then eh?!

I heard they were closing down Dom. It's a rotten shame, they ran a good chandlery business and the old boys in there were a lot more knowledgeable and helpful than the kids employed by another well-known Guernsey chandlers+ who+ shall+ remain+ nameless+ .

HUH? A Groat wasn't a unit of measure, A groat was 4 (old) pence. Maybe you mean the rent was 8 Groats worth of Wheat per year but that sounds incredibly cheap even for those days. 32 pence a year just over 6 shillings roughly 25p in todays money.

Apart from being a term for money, groats are the edible seed part inside the husk of many cereal plants such as wheat or oats. Still not a measure though
