Elizmor - a solution

Are you the Forum Police. Should we propose a thread subject and submit for approval before posting?
Do we have to have a discussion by PM to avoid upsetting people on others' behalf?

I'm not the forum police. I'm a person with an opinion. Or would you rather restrict the forum to posters that only agree with your opinion?
I think you and the rabble should read the forum rules.. Although it seems the moderators need a firm nudge to actually uphold them.

Could you perhaps let us know which posts exactly you believe have broken which rules exactly? Thanks.

The only one I can think of which was really dodgy was the report of some freelance sleuthing in Preston, which was a gross and distasteful invasion of Eleanor's privacy. I suspect that you would not like it if someone took it upon himself to sniff round your boat and report on your movements. I wouldn't like it myself.

Well the MFV in question isn't I suggest a private affair, not since its happenings were posted, willingly, on here by said owner (I assume).

This forum is a public place, with non restricted access, unlike the LOUNGE, so if one puts a head above the parapet or quayside and offers information, seeks help, then its a public issue, is it not?

So any observations from locals is, I offer, warmly welcomed :)

Wow! You really don't see it at all do you?
You are defending your right to an opinion but telling the rest of us our opinions are not acceptable.
You seem to think the rules have been transgressed, and that it's your business to ensure that the mods do something about it.

There is no need for ad hominem abuse. People with a different opinion to you are not necessarily a "rabble" are they? The only forum rule I see broken is the "no abuse" rule that you have just broken there. Would you care to point to the rule infringements by others that you have seen please?

All true; but here's what puzzles many people:

1. An invitation for technical help/support on this forum is not a justification for folk to commence amateur private investigations with the aim of uncovering the OP's whereabouts and other personal details. Moreover, those engaged in this game appear to feel that only an unthinking rabble could question the wisdom of public posts along the lines of, "Been to Samantha's house in the country; its very odd, nobody has seen her for days and even the butler seems to be away ... ...I do feels so sorry for her after she failed to sell her $20m Rembrandt at Christies ...."

2. There are many kind and generous folk on this forum. JE put up a few posts and the advice started to flow. Then a snag (the crane saga) was hit and this very post was set up to "rattle the tin". It is entirely reasonable that a potential donor should be pointed in the direction of an almost carbon-copy fund-raising scheme which she operated only a couple of years back. Yet once again, just pointing this out via a simple link roused a group of outriders prepared to go to great lengths to censor, discredit and drown out those who dare to even mention it.

You haven't read the outcome of the Yacht Scribble scheme JE propagated previously. http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/th...-spirit.88012/

Her winding up comments seemed to overlook some very antagonistic comments made on that thread.
Of course the idea was controversial. For those who 'got' it, it was about the Million Dollar Homepage effect... pocket-money advertising, something different, being part of something that would attract attention and get people talking - indeed, you are talking! No publicity is bad publicity, the more loved/hated the better. It wasn't just about eyeballs on the yacht scribbles, but mainly to the website. There is a 'Media' page on the site with a list of screenshots from various websites that mentioned YS.

I would say we are quite within our rights to question the intention of the thread.

(Not sure about the paparazzi activities though)

Oooh, what did her Voicemails, texts & e-mails reveal then?

All terribly sad. There are some generous souls willing to donate to a cause - arguing with people who smell a rat. There is no need for tempers to be raised.
It seemed to me, in the beginning, that this was a deserving cause – after all a few $/£ would not be missed - but the more I read the more I became concerned that:
- we are being “played”, very much like the Nigerian bank scams;
- sponsors/suppliers, having been “burnt” by this, may well be less inclined to support more deserving and legitimate causes, e.g. what if sponsorship of RNLI dropped off because of adverse reaction to this (or scenarios like this)?
- this is a very interesting social experiment – the ability of the www to crowd-source an income and/or donations for a private cause. There is an argument that the individual and her/his family should “step up” to solve these challenges – why should the “community”?
- there is a risk that, having perceived we were being “played”, that we may become (even more) cynical and in future be less inclined to support and contribute to deserving members and causes;
- the forum is all about providing support to genuine causes, and not necessarily to propping up over-reaching ambitions;
- there is the potential for biases against age/gender/looks etc to be amplified, for some time to come. It is quite likely that other young/female/. . . people will be judged more guardedly as a direct result of this. Thus JE may have done a major disservice to others.
If I have misread the situation I’d be relieved – but regrettably I can only suggest that JE takes a good hard look at herself and thinks about the broader implications of her chosen course.

We have potentailly lost sight of of what drew us to this thread in the first place - what is the fate of MFV Elizmor?

Andrew.
(I might add that as the father of two daughters of 32 and 35 years age I would have been mortified if my daughters had gone down this path – I would of course have bailed them out long ago - and given them an opportunity to listen to my thoughts).

As has been dug up, JE has attempted this method previously via the (rather time limited) yachtscribble.com "experiment". I think the term "blagger", which has been banded around is probably the most appropriate.

But then, if you can, why not? I'm certainly plenty guilty of blagging off family. No other way I'd now be where I am!

I have found that most white people with dreadlocks usually end up trying to scan you somehow - just an observation.

Iirc she could actually afford the cranage, it was more a case of the quote being higher than expected and then some catch 22 situation re insurance as she was trying to cut the corners.

I think the issue is the various unresolved questions, rather than 1 thing in particular. It is very odd that someone with such an active online presence (not only on this forum) would completely disappear. If it was only from this forum I would suspect that we were being had somehow (not sure how though - she was asking for advice, not money)

As it is, disappearing completely from online suggests something more fundamental. The only clue that people have is that she mentioned a hospital appointment in a lighthearted way and people are assuming a linkage. Let's hope not.

What, like Terminator style? :o

Also, I am guessing this said for sake of effect, or deprecating irony...i've known many people of all ethnic origins with dreadlocks, and I would say less than 10% of those were in any way dubious.

She could afford the crane - or at least had one booked - but couldn't afford the survey and insurance charges on top of crane hire. Or didn't want to pay them.

It doesn't take long with Google to find a string of websites and blogs which she has set up and then abandoned shortly afterwards. I cannot imagine why anyone in the digital marketing world would be so averse to building up a continuous online presence.

This post probably takes the prize as the most objective and balanced summary so far. It also makes the good point that it would be a shame if this episode led to the stigmatisation of other more "deserving and legitimate causes". E.g. one of the most honest and competent bankers I know is ...Nigerian!!!
