Elizmor - a solution

Her sponsorship activities, I think, will also tend to turn people off helping in this way, though I can't articulate exactly why (and I'm not saying she shouldn't do it).

I think your view is understandable. Many FMCGs - Unilever, Nestlé, P&G, etc - have realised the power of social media groups like this forum. Their interest is twofold: first, see if you can cheaply harness a positive vibe; second, pay people on the sites a small retainer/lob them a few freebies to protect the brand (there are many students in India doing this). Many of these guardians are given set lines on how to support people and on low to cleverly put them down when required. Lewmar, Icom, Garmin are all grownup firms and have a “right” to do this assuming IPC don’t have an issue with it or want to levy a fee.

Some may just take the view that, all is fair in business and war, and that is their right. But others will be wary of this commercial development. They may become suspicious that say prv, dom or TC may pull off their masks one day and say, “I’m Garmin I want your business!”, “I’m Coca-Cola ...best drink for yachties!” and “I’m David Cameron and I want your vote!” Then Wonga might pop up and offer to finance all purchases at a specially discounted 999% interest rate!

Like you I’m a bit suspicious, but not fully sure.

I believe Ellie has written that the previous owners showed her a quote of £5000 to have the boat lifted back in.

So she knew before she signed on the dotted line what the re-launching cost were likely to be - she did her research.

Good luck Ellie.

Paul
I haven't read every post as I left the thread alone for a while.
I can only speak for myself, but part of my research would have been to ask the Preston Marina manager if the quotation was still valid, and if not what would the current price be?

Re: Ian C's point. I am commenting on the suggestion by Graham that this thread has centred around. Just expressing my opinion of her realistic options.
Sell a share in the boat
Sell the boat
Struggle on and risk going broke.

Perhaps I'm missing something but has JE at any point asked for donations from anyone?

No, indeed. My posts are trying to explain to Graham why I don't think his plan (no doubt made with the best of intentions) has any chance of working.

Interesting thread

I watched the initial thread with much interest.

Brave girl I reckon. Braver than I am. That is one big boat and one heck of a long way from Preston to Brighton in an old boat with an engine that is an unknown quantity.

She has an unfolding story to tell - people love a soap opera. What will happen next? is the most powerful sentence in the English language.

This morning Jill looked across at the laptop and asked me why the thread was so long

I told her the story and immediately she wanted to see the snaps of the inside of the old boat - she normally takes no interest in anything I do. She has not even watched my films

The story is of interest to nest builders, old boat nuts on forums, local newspapers and the digerati.

Ellie knows how digital media works and how to lever their power and influence.

She is also young, attractive and female.

it is a marketable story with a highly marketable character at the centre of it.

Links and comments on the web can be bought and sold

but I think that some old sailors think that they are more valuable than they really are

my guess is that Ellie got her fenders because the marketing guys liked her not because a load of curmudgeonly old sailors kept a thread going for 30 pages

digital links are worth some money but not much

a link on a youtube video is worth around $1 per thousand

Visit my harbour pays for the little logo and link at the top of my web pages - it is worth around a polo tank of petrol a month

but I also make the odd film of harbour entrances for him as well as part of the deal

Forum links and chat on here are worth so little as to be unmarketable

I doubt that there are many Indian digital slaves on here pretending to be British sailors keen to express ecstatic satisfaction with their Raymarine gear - although Viago could be other than he seems

Occasionally people tell me I should put a donate button on my website....but I do not like the idea

if it makes me uncomfortable then there is a good chance it will make the average sailor uncomfortable too because I am just an average sailor

I prefer to sell my journalism - words and pix - it is how I have always earned my keep

DVDs and downloads - it seems more honest

occasionally stuff arrives through the post - mostly books sent by sailors who would like me to share their joy in a book - if I liked them then I review them.

People send me cakes - I have had three so far - and jolly nice that were too

Tohatsu offered me a good price on my outboard - but it was only the price they would sell one to a dealer at

Raymarine offered me a discount on my tillerpilot and it is still going strong

Wests have offered to send a man with a van to stick the well project together and Honda have offered me the loan of an engine for the summer - they are doing it because they think that the project is viable and that others might do the same with old boats and they might sell some more stuff. The digits and links are useful but not the main reason for their involvement.

PBO buy my words at £100 a page - pix free.

As some-one else said - no-one complains about the fact that Ben Ainslie walks around dressed like a human logo

If you have a story to tell and people want to know what will happen next then they are interested

I am amazed at the length of the Centaur threads... people seem more interested in that that KTL - and why not?

All of us use engines, most of us have , or have had, expensive diesel engines that have given us a financial kicking.

Not many people are as keen on sailing up muddy rivers as I am.

so gents.... anyone know of a suitable Centaur?

D

I am sure that I will be corrected if I am wrong but I understood that Ellie was expecting to pay £5k to launch, as advised by seller, then the Marina said she walked away from a £6k quote, of this is the case, an extra £1k is not too bad and should be covered by the contingency fund.

My apologies Dylan, I'd wrongly implied on the other thread that the Tohatsu was a freebie.

Mind you, if I were you I'd be going for the Honda...I can't see they'd be in too much of a hurry to take it back at the end if the sponsorship can live on...and TBH the depreciation of the engine being second hand and for them, no longer saleable, is probably far higher than the value of some fenders or a plotter!

i dont think its a case of ellie not having the money to pay for the lift, after alls said and done shes
got a 34ft yacht to sell in brighton marina! its more a case of health and safty gone mad. i think when she sees
this thread she"ll be pretty embarrassed by it.

The OP is a wind up ...right . If not my Eberspatcher is playing up . can you all stump up a quid each so I can buy a new one ? No thought not .

Typical start a thread then disappear . How much has the "launch fund " raised to date .Dont you think those who subscribed , in any , have a right to know ??

It was a suggestion that was shot down.

Now, crawl back into your hole (and it takes lot to make me descend to your level).

what a nasty character you are I was just asking . It was you who asked for money then went quiet , seems that you are not alone on that score tho'

Clyst, me ol forum chum and fellow boat owner. May I remind you that it was you who nonchalently 'dissed' Ellies boat.... ?

Bung it in a skip, worthless, pile of old timber, unseaworthy...yet you know nothing about boats judging by your posts , eg 'Guys, what is a handrail for on a boat ? ' (cos old motor sailiers like yours have notably high bulwarks and stantions, therefore why on earth fit 'em universally?)

You also 'forgot' that Ellie had a survey on Elizmor before buying.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, a bit less of the "what a nasty character'', please. A more reasoned PROPORTIONAL response even, if you like..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And you have used ''FFS'' twice recently..Why? How does that help your argument exactly?

Now, about that Eber of yours...I can advise if you wish to fit a good 'ol British Taylors, but as to fivers, 'fraid the generosity ran out at the pint of virtual Glenfiddich and with my next sail purchase..

Aye, Tim

wow I have an internet stalker !! Sorry Bluey you must work for the DailyMail and I claim my £10 cos you have taken my posts entirely out of context as you well know .No doubt you blame Ellie's disappearance on the Eastern European immigrants :)

As for me not knowing much about boats raised a chuckle :) If only you knew .

Ain't these forums a constant source of amusement .:)

Amusement? Ah, of course. But I larf 'with' not 'at', you see..(well, I try to anyway).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your 'stalking' is my 'check yer facts'. Ya never know, this bloke might actually know thing or two. I do prefer to deal in facts ya see, it saves so much time.

''Don't tell us what you're gonna do, show us what you've done''. THAT kind of thing....

So what have you done?

I am sure the forum can benefit from your hands on marine experience, fair's fair right?

What Ellie did was fine - it's modern social media marketing for dummies. The idea is that any traffic or content you generate can be recycled and builds subscribers/users/traffic. This in turn has a value, not huge but can make a few quid here and there. Just because one or two others are slightly more subtle (or as Dylan says the forum is of very low commercial value) doesn't make it any kind of sin.

The smart thing to do at this point would be for a crane company to come in and make an offer to do the job for £2,500. Every sailor in the place would then have them at the top of their mental list of crane rental companies for springtime.

I would say the forum (and I am an intermittent user) divides neatly into four groups (think Ven diagram)
1)Those who know a lot about stuff and are willing to share their knowledge -thanks
2)Those I'd like to go for a pint with
3)Those I would rather lick my bilges than go for a pint with
4)Those who know little about boats but still share their opinions anyway

Snide, snearing, unpleasant attitudes just show people up for what they are.

Still not giving a fiver though!
