Ellie's thread has dragged on long enough now and the snide remarks are starting.

Knowing something about desperate boaty situations (Pat C sinking), I think it is time we did something positive. During recovery of the Pat C, my son Mark received a lot of advice (mostly helpful), but also some of the financial variety.

I suggest we start a launch fund, anonymous and run by an independent - our faithful moderator?

How many of us are there? What would a fiver each raise?

Ellie's is a problem that can be solved by throwing money at it.

My house would like some money thrown at it too.

I say this with NO MALICE :

I see African kids maybe 10 years old making sandals out of old tyres for 12 hrs a day, Tanzanian dock workers sleeping on old shelving for weeks on end just to feed their families back in the bush , Id gladly give them a fiver, and have done.

Is Ellie and her boat REALLY a charitable cause ? What do you think Ellie ? Should I pass you a fiver or one of these African kids ?

Ian

I echo some of the replies above me.
Why should the membership throw money at Ellie to sort out her issues?

The steering on my boat has packed up and needs sorting. Fancy throwing a few £ or € my way? Ta muchly.

Not to be cynical, but is it because she's a young lady?

Nice idea but I go along with 'Damsel in distress theme'.

This can only be an individual's choice although I have to say that once you go down the road suggested by the OP we will be swamped by 'charity cases' me included, well I do have a wooden boat and I was turned over big time by an extremely negligent surveyor and it has cost me £18000 so far, more than double the budget and it is only half done and and and and...............

There's one crucial difference between your son's situation and Ellie's - Pat C sinking was an unforseen accident that befell a struggling young man, whereas taking on Elizmor is something that Ellie actively chose to do and everyone knows that big boats come with big bills (especially if they're old and haven't been used). If it wasn't the lift-in, it might just as well have been a defective engine, or half the fastenings turning out to be corroded, or whatever.

Her sponsorship activities, I think, will also tend to turn people off helping in this way, though I can't articulate exactly why (and I'm not saying she shouldn't do it).

As far as I remember, nobody asked for money for Pat C; any offers were unilaterally made. There is a difference between deciding you want to help somebody, and having a tin rattled in your face.

I'm out :)

Forget it graham. Too many nay sayers on here. Those who dont want to should keep their traps shut, but no they have to criticise those who do.
How dare they question where you wish to place your charity.
But they will.
If they must give us further insight into their negative worlds , then it would be OK to say "I wouldn't do that" but they will say "YOU shouldn't do that"
Doesn't matter what you,re talking about, there will be a nasty naysayer.

i can foresee a lot more snide comments arriving in this thread but i guess and hope ellie has the personality to rise above them knowing that the majority on here wish her well

Oh, I wish her well in her endeavours, don't get me wrong. I also have no issues with JE asking for help and advice on the forum, at the end, that's what it's here for. I've asked for and received enough assistance through here. Personally, I draw the line when people start asking for financial help for what is essentially an "every day" problem. Though it seems a lot of people on here (generally older men) tend to have a soft spot for the damsel in distress.

Exactly.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Elizmor come chugging down the coast; actually I'm rather jealous, as a year ago (as mentioned on the original thread) I was half expecting to be doing it myself!

But this sort of begging (as distinct from two-way sponsorship, or help freely offered) is distasteful.

I need some new fenders and anchor and a new GPS for my boat, unfortunately I cant afford them, anyone willing to give me a fiver towards these items.? No thought not

I've struggled through as much of the original thread as I can.
Preston marina seem to be very reasonable indeed. They can't help the changes in the laws and can't be expected to "wing it".

I think Ellie has made a terrible mistake. As suggested, the sensible thing to do would have been to ask the launch-cost question before buying. But that's a done deal.

I don't see any difference between someone buying a chapel to convert into a home and running out of money for unforeseen circumstances. It happens all the time in property. The people have to sell at a loss, raise more money themselves, or go bust.

If she can raise some money privately for a share in the boat that would be an ideal solution.
However, speaking purely personally, I don't think the idea of raising money through donations a very savoury concept.

I don't think this thread is helping Ellie at all, my advice to Graham and to Ellie is to cancel any suggestion of a fund and concentrate efforts on resolving the issue. The suggestion of monetary donations has not added quality to Ellie's story. The sponsorship is a different matter and good luck to her, it seemed quite fair and reasonable.

I believe Ellie has written that the previous owners showed her a quote of £5000 to have the boat lifted back in.

So she knew before she signed on the dotted line what the re-launching cost were likely to be - she did her research.

Good luck Ellie.

Perhaps I'm missing something but has JE at any point asked for donations from anyone?

Seems ridiculous, people moaning on here for something she's never done or asked for!
