Wouldn't surprise me, probably will be causing "tracking" wich will account for poor running. Get another one and replace the other parts that need it if you haven't already done so. It'll run sweet as a nut once you sort it.
u never said you had an old Triumph.
What is it. I had a Bantam as a teenager, it siezed up and I dumped in Dollis Brook. probably still there.
Had a Bonneville for a bit and then went jap in the 70's
Phil
1974 Triumph adventurer. Had bantams aswell, all kinds of old brit iron, carry a yanmaha 125 trailway on the boat, to be replaced with the adventurer, sometime. In the early 70`s I was racing a /R, then a 499 Matchless metisse. My brother has raced all kinds of gear, now has a thruxton Velocette to play with. Bikers from way back.
Thanks for the part numbers. I have ordered a cap from my local motor factor but it is still mega price of £27 + VAT. The only good thing is Keyparts charge £33.65 +VAT and then delivery on top. The problem as you probably know is you have to buy the Bosch cap as there are no pattern parts for it. I still feel having read the posts to this tread I might go for an electronic ignition system. Will a standard Bosch distributor fitting kit be ok?
Hmm, does sound a bit heavy. The last cap that I bought was 19 quid including the VAT. Still you've saved a few quid over the keyparts price and probably a bundle over the Volvo dealers price.
If you do go for a leccy ignition kit, go for a good one, like the Microdynamics, don't go for a mishmash of parts robbed of other cars. I still like to keep things simple and easy to diagnose and repair while afloat. Nothing worse than having something stupid let you down that you can't repair. Spoils a good day out.
I have been looking in my Demon Tweaks catalogue and they sell Lumenition or Magnetronics. I am slightly leaning towards the Lumenition though as they have been around for a long time.
Ummm, Lumenition near 2 x price of Aldon Ignitor (I think Magnetronics maybe similar) or similar, also has external leccytronic box which needs mounting to something and protecting from water. Agricultural V£%$o lump don't need anything too scientific so that rules out Microdynamic mappables etc. Of all the people I know with the I know of NO failures. As I said earlier Aldon is Pertronix which have been around in the USA very long time.
The Aldon Ignitor seems to only be for Lucas distributors and is about the same price or a little bit more than Lumenition. The Magtronic system is £78.67 from Demon Tweaks and does not seem to have a box. Everything seems to fit in the distributor.
The Magtronic and ignitor are so close in appearance to be virtually identical but I have no experience of the Magtronic. This link is for a whole heap of Ignitors for the Bosch dizzies <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.aldonauto.co.uk/shop/asp/product.asp?product=91&cat=39&ph=&keywords=&recor=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=>http://www.aldonauto.co.uk/shop/asp/product.asp?product=91&cat=39&ph=&keywords=&recor=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=</A>
Thanks for the link I probably should have persevered more. My problem is not knowing the model number of the distributor. Every time I try and find out if there is a fixing kit I draw a blank when they say they need to know which distributor is fitted.
Nearly all, if not all, 4 pot ohc lumps used the JF4 dizzy.. So the settings for your lump will be something in the region of 6degress btdc initial setting or 34-35 degress on the strobe. But this is max advance so will have to be set at about 3600-4000 rpm. If they need to know the dwell angle its about 60 degrees I think. not 100% sure.
Probably teaching granny to suck eggs, but when you fit the gubbins in. Check that the centrifugal weights under the base plate work ok. A lot of running probs arise from them sticking. careful of the springs though, you cant get them anymore! Oh and if the system your gonna use does a way with the externally mounted condenser, which nearly all do, make sure you put the screw back in and cover the hole where the gromment went in. Other wise moisture, spark protected, blah, blah, blah. You get the picture.
