Had a quote of £125 for updating the c map chip in my plotter, 2-3 years old, seems abit steep, how often to forumites update? For solent sailing the IOW still seems where it was left last, some things like the Bembridge channel change too fast for any plotter, just follow the bouys, sounder and locals. It does still have the Rame head in Portsmouth, long since made into razor blades but is it worth £125 in practice?

£125 standard for cmap update - you'd probably have to pay at least that for a new set of paper charts covering a comparable area...

But you wouldn't have to pay £125 for the updates for paper charts, just your labour to mark the charts.

I guess they figure if you have the money for expensive electronics you are fair game........

Exactly.

I treat my paper charts as the "master", and keep them up to date. The plotter chip I allow to age gracefully, on the basis that harbour entrances don't move much, and if anything ever looks confusing I can have a peek down the hatch to see if it's changed. If I'm looking for a particular light or buoy (the most likely things to have changed) then I'm probably still navigating on the chart anyway.

Frustration - all Navionics chart updates on my iPad are free, but £130 to update the plotter cartridge. Exactly the same info from the same company :(
