This is the breaker panel on my Westerly Griffon. Can any tell me or hazard a guess at what the black knob at the bottom is for please?
I can't work it out and it's not in the book.

It looks like a later addition to the panel.
Does it rotate or pull out?
If it turns could it be a master switch for the panel?
If it is some sort of plug and socket then probably for 12v accessories.
You could always unscrew the panel and see how it is connected.

I'm with sgr143; it's a jack plug in a socket designed for 12V supply to external accessories, before fag lighter sockets became ubiquitous. My Westerly Falcon had one but it would trip the breaker if you connect or disconnect it while live.

A lot of the electrical panels and related equipment for Westerlys were made by kdd: Kdd Powercentre

I had a problem with sorting out the voltage sensitive relay on my boat (built 1985), soon after buying it four years ago. I looked up kdd, more out of curiosity than expectation, and found a phone number. Without much expectation, I gave it a try. This was on a Saturday afternoon, so I expected either "our business hours are..." or, more likely "number unobtainable". Greatly to my surprise and pleasure, the phone was picked up by Mr kdd (Brian) 's wife, who called him over from where he was watching the afternoon's football on the TV. We had a nice chat, he helped me sort out the problem, and he emailed the circuit diagrams shortly afterwards. Now that's what I call service!

You might find that if you use a stereo jack with three lands and do not use the centre land that there is no tripping. I used these to replace the original Westerly system that used something like a TV antenna plug and socket but used a stereo socket to avoid this shorting .

It's weird. I had a look behind the panel via engine compartment but came away none the wiser. It does rotate through 270 deg about but one end of the handle hits the red indicator lights. Not tried pulling it. Will do delicately on the weekend.

That's great customer service!

It looks to me like a switch protector as used on aircraft. ie it is just a plastic cover so that you have to pull it up and out to expose the ordinary toggle switch underneath. Use to stop inadvertent operation of the switch which might operate a paralleling relay for emergency engine start. Yet I can't imagine OP has not found this if it is in fact what it is. ol'will

Brian of KDD posts here occasionally as Halcyon.

Connected to your radio output to connect your music???

The vision this induces is rather like something from a Mad Max film: the skipper in the crosstrees wielding some insanely flamboyant electric guitar, plugged intimately into the boat electrics, so that the whole craft pulsates with the deafening sound as the boat charges down the Solent in pursuit of...

Oh, it's just a 12V outlet? What a shame.

Not one of our panels, but probably a 1/4 stereo jack for power take off. We had lots of probles with them, Parker make a stainless steel pen 1/4 dia and owner's kids kept pocking them in, resulting in a dead short.

Sorry can't be more helpfull.
