In the engine room there is this big red box, the contents of which I am unsure of!

The big black one to the left is the main fuse, and the brass at the bottom is the shunt but I can't make out what the three silver jobbies are.

Can anyone shed any light on the subject please?

Have you got old perkins or ford sabres? if so they will have old type inertia starter motors, 2 are for the motors, the other is a battery link solenoid to enable starting engines should one battery bank fail or be discharged.

what engines do you have? sometimes these will be used as a slave solonoid to the starters although they look like they are linked so could also be parallel solonoids as already mentioned, can you post a clearer picture showing the cables in a bit more detail? also how many different battery banks do you have may give us more of an idea, and do you have thrusters? as they could also parallel the batterys to power the bow/stern thruster

I also suspect they are solenoids...IE one for starting port engine...One for starting starboard engine......and the third is possibly for the emergency linking of the port and starboard batteries should one of them go flat and so allow both engines to be started from both batteries.

Mind you they could be for the windlass :D Should be easy enough to find out which one does what!

That must be about it

Thanks fella's

THAT makes sense, yes they are ford sabres, yes there is a parallel button on the dash, bl**dy brilliant ta..

What I set out to do....

was look to see if I had a galvanic isolator, which I dont. It would appear I dont have an RCD either, arrrrrrg

Ford sabres dont usually have inertia starters, they would just be a slave solonoid to prevent the full load of the starter solonoid going through the start/key switch if they are on the start circuit

There is a thermo start

might be relays for higher current items, water pump, large fan, equally with sabre, might be for the thermo start.

But I think it is the isolation switch(s) relays, which are situated under the steps in the wheelhouse and very small, i'll trace it through and report back

The water pump and all other units are 24V and on their ouwn switch panels and don't make things click

Just found my ford sabre manual, now looking at wiring diagram and it shows a thermostart relay, a start relay and a stop relay, now looked at parts manual and the relays shown are the lucas 33ra type so nothing like the ones in your pics.
The parts book shows some good vies of the wiring but nothing to resemble your picture.
Have you got these books?

I've got the manuals

If all else fails then read the book:D
But seriously I dont think you will find out what these solonoids do from the sabre books, think you will have to follow cables to get a better idea of what they do, good luck and get more pics if you can as you know we all like pictures

I have to trace them all through, along with all the other bl**dy wires, there are hundreds of them, let alone the garmin network, 24-12V units, the washer solenoid, the hydraulics, all the other systems, but thankfully the fridge works so the beer is cold!

Pics will follow for sure.
