I have an electric bilge pump, a Jabsco. Like this Jabsco 50880-1000 Self Priming Diaphragm Pump (12V / 16 LPM)

it is mounted out of the bilge in a galley locker, quite high up. There is a float switch, and I can also switch it on manually. The pump has lasted maybe 10 years but will soon need to be replaced. My boat is wood, and sometimes it leaks; I need a good pump.

i wonder if anyone has any better suggestions? This has been fine, but things do move on and perhaps a better solution is available?
thank you

Hi @gdallas

I have similar. My bilge is deep but very narrow, so a self priming pump was the only solution. I choose a Whale Gulper 320 which can do 19Lpm which is slightly more than yours (16Lpm). To be honest the difference between those rates is probably academic. I like mine. Works well. Will pump rubbish if required.

Some ideas;
  1. Can you fit a pump deep in the bilge that will pump more? Remember to include head losses
  2. Or you can replace as-is. Possibly simpler?
  3. Or you can look for a different self priming pump like the my Whale for more Lpm
  4. Can you buy a service kit for yours and give it a new life?
Hope that helps!

If you can find anywhere to mount it so that it's not self-priming but submerged when it's asked to work you'll remove a big part of the potential problem.
