Evening All

Just to get it clear in my head and stop any niggles I have, would chartplotters purchased in the USA be usable in the UK with no issues, just want to make sure !

I bought my Standard Horizon CP180 in the US, no problems. You just have to deselect fathoms.

Most (if not all) boat electronics work on either 12 or 24 v dc, so they'll work on board with no worries. The only thing to watch out for is that any bundled charts will be of US waters rather than UK unless you can persuade the retailer to swap the charts for one of more use to you.

Generally it is better to use the same units as on your paper charts. Modern charts use metres for depth.

BE aware that some manufacturers use geofencing so that a device purchased in the Americas will not work outside that region.

Eg. Lowrance have a geofence programmed into the units that identifies (via GPS) where the unit is, and if the unit is an American standard unit, and the current location is outside of 30 degrees West and International Dateline East of the Americas, the unit will revert to US imperial units only and flash a message on the screen continuously saying "This unit is not set up in this area please contact authorized dealer".
