EES passport checks catch 4000 over stayers in first 4 months

AFAIK, fines differ between states. Deportation (potentially without your boat? 😱) and/or a ban from re-entering the EU is also a potential consequence of overstaying.

1000 per month is quite a low number. Only about 35 per day.

I guess the UK gov does not want to agree a longer stay of 180 days since it would mean more uk money spent abroad.

More like they don't want to be seen to be returning to EU freedom of movement but the reality is we had the right to remove non-contributing EU citizens after 90 days before B***** and never did.

I have no evidence, but I would have thought that the figure was much lower prior to EES?

Edited to add: the article states 17 million travellers made 30 million border crossings during the period.

Paywall so cant read and consequently cant comment. (not you fault, obvs).
Sorry. I forgot about the paywall. I suspect that pasting the text here would be frowned upon unfortunately. The headline says it all really however. During the period, Schengen countries recorded some 16,000 refusals of entry - mostly identity fraud, people trying to enter or exit numerous times using different passports, and use of false documents. A victim of trafficking was also identified.

It's nothing to do with the UK government -the Schengen zone was established by the EU around the turn of the century.

It's existence really only hit the headlines in the UK since we left the EU and as we've become non EU citizens because of the B word are now restricted - just like any other non EU citizen - to staying within the zone for a rolling maximum 90 days out of every 180 instead of having the freedom of travelling for as long as we please.

You could reasonably argue that it's the EU who've shot themselves in the foot a tad by restricting UK citizens length of stays and therefore the money they spend within the bloc and yes, that's been an issue particularly for those areas in Euroland whose local economies have significant dependency upon British long stay tourists and holiday home owners.

As an aside I'm not sure anybody who's accustomed to European travel would actually be content with holidaying in the UK as a substitute, no matter how much our government and tourist industry would like their cash to be spent here instead.

without getting too current affairs, it is becoming more apparent each passing day what way the wind is blowing these days. I don’t think we’ll have to be patient a whole lot longer. It’s one thing we have a lot to thank a certain buffoon over the pond for.

Well of course they are.

But what about all the people traffickers and terrorists and gun runners and drug overlords and pimps and child pornographers and financial scammers and big time thieves and violent criminals and those with false identities and other random wanted individuals who're already entitled to be in the EU and can therefore travel freely around huh?

What about them?

What about them? No different to them moving about the US, the UK or any other country. You have to balance risk against reward and the rewards are huge. With the freedom of movment yoiu also have police and immigration control co-operation. We lost a lot of that as well

Everything to do with the UK government. Reports at the time said the EU offered 180 days but Oliver Letwin or his team turned it down.
Suspect that had something to do with what the EU required in return. They never give anything "for free" as we see in the current discussions on youth movement - they are only pursuing it because the benefits are for them. Same with Erasmus. UK will be the loser.
