just buying a 2002 princess with TAMD 74P EDC. Was surpised to discover that Volvo are still carrying out retrofits to the EDC system. I know they were very unreliable in the mid 90's but assumed they were fixed by 2002?
The latest mod seems to be replacing some of the connections in the main connector block as they had a problem of going intermittent.

Anyone got any info or experiences on this model I might need to be aware of?

Have 74p EDC's on F43, have had the recall letter to get "connections" replaced, will get done in 2006. Only problem we have had was with the multi station selection unit. It failed the day before our annual vacation big trip. Thick end of £1k later fixed it!! Not covered on Warranty as 2 months over 24 months old.

I suspect the "connection" recall is also to gain access to upgrade software that has caused sporadic revving on some boats, more with 75's than 74's though. Big case in Southern France apparently was mentioned by Insurance Company during a claim by a friend who "thought" he had perhaps caught throttle with knee. Now not sure but he covered 3rd party costs, so as to skirt delay due to other case and get boat back in water.

Big problems on all small engine EDC's from volvo I have 72p's both have gone, the boast sensor which is embedded fails its a £20 bit but will cost 1400 to replace each as MK1 no longer available. Its a known problem worldwide with volvos but they refuse to acknowledge problem, I think in USA there was a court case in progress at some time.
If you search the mails for volvo EDC of Doffy then you will see the inputs from others.
I had a cracked sump again no interest from volvo the engine was repaired by Volvo agaent it now vibrates like mad and Volvo man can't find problem it also cannot reach 2500 rpm, I found a few problems but this has been going on since the summer.
My advise unless you can afford to buy new volvos 72-75 series at end of warranty then look elsewhere.

Volvo will charge for software upgrade.

Get a volvo man in with PC to check the EDC it will also tell you a lot about the engine hours max revs etc and lots more. it will take no more than 30 mins to check two engines.

Check condition of fly throttles if open to elements the pots can be a problem.

Best of luc

I've got a 2001 Princess with EDC's on 74P's and have had the mod done. I really wouldn't worry about it; the mod, apparently cures a problem (though I've not experienced it)whereby the engines can engage when the throttle position is in neutral; another part of the mod is to put a piece of foam inside the relay box, which stops the engine from stalling as a result of the stop relay vibrating too much.

My engines have been Ok (seriously touching wood here), though I look after them with tender loving care.......

Kindly confirm do I need to replace boost sensors coz have an opinion of replacing air pressure sensor.
To test for incorrect signals in relation to actual temp or pressure you need to plug in diagnostics key , for example if the boost temp is reading 99deh c when it’s actually 18 deg it will back off the fuel , that’s an example .
you can get the resistance info and test each sensor with a multi meter , but that’s hard work .
