Echopilot - forward looking depth gauge

Forward looking sounders ar brill bits of kit. Once you've used one you'll never go back to the old one. I used one when on a friends boat on the east coast. Its as easy as anything to keep in the channels, especially when you can't see the markers. Takes a bit of setting up though, but well worth the hassel.

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

And what if you have to go back to a normal echo sounder - will you still be able to avoid running into things if you can only look straight down?

How far should this love affair with technology go? Are we sailors or starship captains?

No its an aid, as is gps radar and all the other bits of kit that boaters buy. Starship captains wouldn't know about that......Gotta go and beam up for my dinner!

If the bottom is soft mud or slopes upwards very gradually the unit sometimes fails to "see" it and you run aground, as long as you are aware of this there not to bad
