********!! Eberspacher

Looks really effective. Do flames really come out of it?

I am glad to confirm that it is entirely ineffective as a flame thrower! Yet another example of Chinese BS! With all the effort that these industrious little buggers put into manufacture you would think they had the foresight to employ just one European (preferably English of course) to teach them how to market stuff. How much better would they sell if they had an in country agent dealing with sales, marketing, literature and then preferably service and the supply of spare parts? The first thing that puts us off over here is obvious lies and BS. Not having any servicing agency is a big off putting factor. With the price of these things they could afford to pay a significant mark up to a UK agent. If you could buy one with a meaningful warranty from a UK agent with service and spare parts it would be worth paying 30% more!!! Even a readable instruction manual for the control unit would be an improvement and some simple installation instructions would not go amiss. Looking at you tube and reading the Facebook group on the things it is obvious that most of them are installed in motorhomes by total numpties who have no idea at all and have never even seen one before!! Frightening.......

You can walk away from a burning motorhome....

People have died in motorhomes and caravans from carbon monoxide poisoning and fire. Usually because of ignorance and DIY installation of various forms of heating and gas installations not helped by the attitude you express. As a caravan owner I am personally aware of 2 deaths from installations that have not complied with good practice on installation. These heaters represent a real risk if not installed and maintained properly. Installing with the exhaust outlet directly under the van with leaky floorboards can be fatal. I also inherited a boat with a Wabasto that was pumping out a fairly high amount of Co due to a cracked casting. If I had left it on overnight it would have killed me. You can't walk away from a motorhome if you are dead..........it's not just fire that kills. Last year I took 3 people to hospital in Norwich that had slept in a TENT with a wood burning stove and nearly died of carbon monoxide poisoning. People installing such equipment need to know the risks.

A very strong argument in favour of a CO detector - and making sure it's got decent batteries in it!

Couldn't agree more Stemar. However my original point which pvb seems to have missed is anyone, Chinese or otherwise, selling equipment like this should supply meaningful advice on how to install it safely. I think boaties being used to Eberspacher and the like are probably very sensible and understand that (for instance) the exhaust must be lead outside the vessel through a well designed skin fitting that won't set fire to the vessel and wont let toxic exhaust back in to the vessel. If you look on You Tube you will see people with installations that lead an exhaust straight through a hole in the wooden floor!! To make matters worse some of them have an exhaust outlet under the van when the floor is by no means gas tight. Nightmare! But yes a CO detector would be part of any installation in my opinion.

I don't think you'll find many Eber (or similar) installations on boats where the exhaust is led through a hole in the floor. :D

The original seems to be a Croatian proverb, but plenty of sources, if that's the right word for Internet wafflings, attribute it to Discworld.

While nosing around, I came across an great Italian mushroom proverb I'm going to use and abuse as appropriate: Compliments are like mushrooms, the most beautiful are the most poisonous.
