Hello, have d3l that refuses to fire up! when i switch on [engine running],heater motor starts, after about 30 secs. smoke from exhaust,[bluish] for about 3 mins after which fan cuts out. have tried restart as per manual, but same thing happens, smoke but no fire!have recently fitted new glow plug, and a new pump, +new battery [640 starting amps] which is only connected to heater, also i use a separate fuel tank with white diesel, not sure what else to do,so any advice/help, appreciated.cheers,Dave

It perhaps needs a proper clean and service, which requires dismantling it. Sounds like the flame isn't getting established.
.

Have you seen if it brings up a fault code? I'm not familiar with the d3l but my d1lc has a very basic thermostatic control with two LEDs...if there is an error it will flash a certain combination of lights, the just google the fault code...it might help.

Also, have you tried cleaning all the connectors to the various relays etc? Mine has had similar issues, and a clean of the connectors sorted it. I think the eber is programmed to shut down if things aren't exactly spot on, and I think the furry connections were causing a voltage drop.

Others may know better but I think you only have about 5 attempts at starting then it locks out, dealer needs to plug in to reset.

There is a wick in the combustion chamber, if this deteriated badly (ie desintegrated) the flame wont establish properly.
I done an a serious of strip down pics for the D3L a few years ago which will let you see the wick, felt rings, and fibre seals etc.
I got my spares from this company and great advice from one of its experts (Ray)

The Eber spares manual/list or workshop manuals dont show/list the wick, but there is one there.

I had a similar problem last year, it would smoke badly when starting, then it refused to start. If you haven't serviced it before its most likely overdue. On my Dl3 the plug was bunged up as well as the gauze I must have taken about half a mug full of carbon out of the heat exchanger. It runs hotter now starts first time and no more smoke. If you are interested I will dig out the part numbers of what you need and see if I can find who I bought the bits from. They were really helpful .

hello, will do service, thought i would get a service kit [incidently was told by heater specialist [butlertechnic] that the d3l does not have a gauze, anyway, would apprecciate parts info if not too much trouble.Cheers,Dave

People may be confusing the plug gauze with the "wick" properly called the heat exchanger liner, the D3L has one of those, they get covered in carbon and sometimes disintigrate which would lead to your symptoms.

Hello, have done service, new 'wick[,gaskets, etc, good clean out'and you were right, wick had all but disintegrated, just leaving mesh in h/exch. Anyway, checked all electric connectionsetc, all seem to be o.k. put heater back together, installed back on boat, primed pump, etc, but now have a new problem.Basically, switch on heater, fan runs fast after about 10 secs one 'click',fan carries on running fast for about 25-30secs.then another 'click',fan rotates slow, and nothing else.Have checked voltage at diognastic plug [12.5v]also at glow plug relay,0.26,while fan was running slow [not sure if relay reading is o.k. or not Hoping you could advise me on what to do next with these symptons, cheers, dave

I had similar symptoms to you (although mine would run for a few minuets) after I serviced my d3l this year. It turned out that the combustion air inlet had a blockage! The pipe had a plastic liner on the inside and this had delaminated!
I would check all pipes for blockages.

But your pump would have still been "clicking" regardless of any blockage, the OPs one appears not to be doing so.

Agreed, just thought I would share, not sure how sensitive these things are I thought maybe if it was a complete blockage somewhere it may shut down straight away hence no clicking!??

If you see smoke then it means that the fuel reaches the heater and that the glow plug is heating it but it fails to ignite. However normally this smoke should be white or light colour, not dark or blueish, so It can be two things:

1) more likely: the screen is covered in sooth and therefore it will not become red hot to help the ignition, cleaning it is not an option because just by removing it will get it damaged, replace the screen first and try again
2) if the above is not sufficient replace also the glow plug (that may be soothed too)

Finally once you get it going run it four hours with Parasene (B&Q) instead of Diesel. This will clean the combustion chamber very well for another six months use on dirty Diesel.

1) This is a D3L, it doesn't even have one.
2) & finally. It's just been decoked cleaned out internally and had a brand new heat exchanger liner.

Don't think so - when ours runs out of diesel it can easily take more than 5 attempts for it to bleed itself.
