My search made may wonder if eberspacher problems are the biggest single topic on our furum??.........My specific problem not covered though!!
The unit worked fine until I started to fit it on the boat, I believe that one mistake was to use inadequate wire from the battery and thus there was insufficient power. Worse still I inadvertantly reversed the polarity although it did try to start up after this.
Took it all back home for 'bench testing' and dicovered that the fuel pump is not working. I can get fuel to pump by using wire directly to the pump and even get the heater to work by clicking away every second. This gets very tiring after a few hours and thecrew insist that I get it working properly!!
I guess that there is some (expensive) gizmo in the control unit which I may have blown.
Can anyone help on this please??
Happy christmas to all.

Hi,
you didn't say which model of Eberspacher you have.
When mine packed up (D4L) and the pump stopped clicking, it turned out to be the timer relay that had burned out (this waits 16 seconds or so when the power is switched on before enabling the pump to give the glow plug time to hear up).

It's possible that if you have a similar model of heater, the reverse polarity may have affected the timer circuitry and you will need to replace the relay.

To figure whether the relay is at fault, it's possible to remove the relay and jump the appropriate connections to see if the pump starts working.

Similarly you could have a later model of heater and everything I just said is therefore useless ;o)

I hope this helps.

Happy Christmas,
Paul

When you reversed the polarity i assume the fuse blew ?,i have repaired several d1lc models where they have no fuse at all.
If yours is this model it may be repairable

I reversed the polarity on installing an Airtronic a couple of months ago; and not just for a couple of seconds!

I suffered no problems and the unit has works fine ever since.

I do not however have an electronic timer only the on/off/fan switch and dial setting control box.

Of course you may just have a faulty control box..............I would suggest you send it back if it's a new unit; or lock on ebay otherwise (using one of the distributors on there)

Thanks Steve and Paul. The heater is a D5W.
All the fuses were intact.
Can you tell me where this relay is situated?
I made the mistake with polarity cos the negative leads were coloured Brown, is this normal or am I really loosing the plot.
Must close to get into my red outfit and beard.
Merry Christmas!!

Hi,
I think the D5W is quite a bit later technology than mine.
If it does have such a relay, it's seperate to the control unit (my relay is mounted next to it and it just pulls out).
If you don't have such a relay then that functionality is probably integral to the control unit itself.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul,
There are two relays (I think) in the fuse box. I'm guessing that the relay is the black box thing about 1" square and 3" long?
I will investigate further. Just hoping that the problem is not in the main control unit as these seem to cost a fortune.
It is a bit suprising that an accidental reversal of polarity has not a simple protection. Perhaps Eberspacher havnt heard of idiots!!
Thanks again.

Hi,
that sounds like a relay (at least the dimensions sound about correct).
If it is a relay, it's likely it will just pull out revealing (most likely) 4 terminals. 2 of them are supplied +/- 12v and the other two are the switched terminals which are either closed (most likely) or opened when power is supplied to other terminals. It's likely the switched terminals are larger than the two which are supplied power.

Bridging the switched terminals in the relay holder, with the relay removed, revealed the problem in my case. Be very careful not to make a mistake here however as you may make things worse.

To be safer, you may just want to consider taking the relay(s) to your bench and seeing if you can prove they work out of the circuit - shouldn't be too difficult. Remember if yours has a timer-type relay there will be a delay before it actuates of several seconds.

FYI, on my system, the second relay controls the air solenoid valve which is under the heater (I don't know if your model has this fitted).

I hope this helps (after several glasses of Christmas wine ;o)

Good luck. Let us know how you get on.

Cheers,
Paul
