Update.
Following the advice from the Forum, I went down yesterday and cleaned up the power supply connector to my Eberspacher. This was not easy as the design of the connector makes it extremely difficult, especially the female half. However, following this the heater did start up again, it even started once on my new batteries, and seemed to run reasonably well although I am not sure the fan was chucking out quite the volume it once did.
However, a further problem surfaced in that although the heater would power down if you lowered the temperature on the thermostat, it would not power up again when the temperature was increased. Is this also possibly a poor connection issue?
Finally, somebody some time ago recommended a connection to replace those I currently have, I seem to recall it may have been an Advansea of some sort; you you possibly do this again.

Cowes Marine Engineers (CME) fitted new eberspacher d5 for me and rebuilt friends webasto too. helpful and very competent guys, recommended. based in East Cowes.
