Think that the article was really an Advert for EBAY,buy a Yacht on us, and look how far anyone can sail it ? even a poorly condition Yacht .

Having read the piece, I get the impression that it was the Skipper who the main problem, if so he would not be the only Skipper to get into trouble taking a new bought Yacht from a South Devon Port Eastwards

Just a few years ago a fella disapeared sailing his New Bought Boat from Torquay Eastwards, funny though, it was a Yacht that I had showed an interest in buying just before he bought it

Thought that maybe the Skipper fell ill during the trip, beleive that his Yacht turned up washed up on the Dorset Coast

Yep, I recall that Donald Crowhurst sailed from local port, on his last eventfull voyage

My only experience with the coastguard and rnli, other than chipping in a few quid every now and again was a few years ago when rafted to my wife's cousin's boat on the crouch on a calm, balmy summer day.

Andy's boat was a tahana (?) 55 with a long bowsprit and ours was a 24 foot cruiser racer. After lunch we cast off and stupidly caught our shrouds in Andy's bowsprit and in a flash the mast came down. No problem. We tied it up to the cabin top, tidied up all the halyards to make sure nothing was dragging in the water. We then motored the few miles up the Roach to our mooring in paglesham. As we had an emergency ariel and people on other boats were looking at us we radioed the coastguard. Said if they got any reports of a dismasted yacht, not to worry that we were fine and motoring back to the mooring and didn't need assistance. Out of the blue an rnli rib turned up from Burnham and told us they were going to shadow us. We assured them we were ok but they insisted and we chatted as we both chugged up the Roach.
No problems but we were a bit miffed where in the Burnham paper the next day there was a report of the rnli saving 3 people on a dismasted yacht and taking them back safely. Ever since then I've taken their stats with a pinch of salt.

I do wonder why E bay is even mentioned... its just a shop front . Why does it have to be judged at all, it was up to the owner after purchase to decide/ make the boat fit for the voyage . The whole article is another example of how biased and judgemental our media has become and doesn't even give any interesting facts
