Had to visit the Eastbourne area at the weekend for work so decided to do another little video as a keepsake. I thought some of you who might hail from or know the area might be interested in the large scale Beach protection works that are being carried out at the moment.
I remember sailing past when I helped my friend bring his Naid sail boat from the Hamble to 'Ipswich'

Interesting film.
As I learnt in GCSE Geography, those beach defence projects are an expensive attempt to bend nature but the sea will probably move it all back again some time in the future :)

Yes and on the ground it looks like massive work but from the air the bit they are moving looks rather insignificant

At school in Eastbourne we had an area known as The Wish. Apparently it was an old Roman harbour, but is now 400 yards from the sea. And the site of battle of Hastings and Pevensey Castle are now miles away from the coast, which was the reason for their siting a thousand years ago.

I live quite close to Eastbourne and keep my boat, and work, at the marina there. These beach works are carried out on quite a regular basis; probably every couple of years and on occasions the dredger Sospan Dau is used to fire shingle up on to the beach. Quite an impressive site!

Due to the Longshore Drift, the shingle builds up on the Western outer arm of the marina and has to be dug up and loaded onto lorries that drive it round to the other side of the marina entrance, dump it on the beach, where it is then graded by a bulldozer. If this isn't done, the shingle defences disappear and the properties on the shoreline are at risk, as is the low lying area behind.

This work is carried out annually and I believe the council levy a charge on a large number of properties that would be affected if the defence works aren't carried out.

Interesting.
The Sospan Dau videos are a good watch! Fascinating boat.
