We were sailing back to Burnham from Pyefleet yesterday morning - yes, that's right, there was almost no wind! As we drifted happily down the Colne, mostly goosewinged, we were overtaken by about 8 motoring yachts who had come out of Brightlingsea. What was remarkable was that all the helmsmen looked terrified, and were desperately trying to keep in the very middle of the channel, even if it meant running us down, and they were all motoring very, very slowly so they were only doing about 1 knot more than us. Also, none of them waved!
Likely scenario: A visiting group from the south coast - you don't wave there - who were freaked out by tales of the sandbanks, and were terrified of Colne Bar and the Spitway.
Alternatively, they all had horrible hangovers - I guess that's the more likely explanation!
