We were sailing back to Burnham from Pyefleet yesterday morning - yes, that's right, there was almost no wind! As we drifted happily down the Colne, mostly goosewinged, we were overtaken by about 8 motoring yachts who had come out of Brightlingsea. What was remarkable was that all the helmsmen looked terrified, and were desperately trying to keep in the very middle of the channel, even if it meant running us down, and they were all motoring very, very slowly so they were only doing about 1 knot more than us. Also, none of them waved!

Likely scenario: A visiting group from the south coast - you don't wave there - who were freaked out by tales of the sandbanks, and were terrified of Colne Bar and the Spitway.
Alternatively, they all had horrible hangovers - I guess that's the more likely explanation!

I heard a lovely story about East Coast visitors. My friend and his wife did a sailing exchange holiday - they went to Norway to sail for a week with another couple of their boat and then they came here for a week's sailing on my friend's boat.

When they departed the mooring in Norway my friend's wife started having kittens because, almost immediately, the depth sounder showed an error. She was reassured when the Norwegians told her it showed an error because the water was too deep!

They got their revenge when the Norwegians came here! :D

Yes I think I sailed between them I was coming from West Mersea if it was the same group, the cutter with the brown sails waved and then made out to T bone me!

Yes, we had a really good sail at times, the wind was about 6-7knots then suddenly it went to 12-13knots and backed 30 degrees then 5 mins later it went back to 6-7knots and veered the 30 deg, this kept going until it died completely off the Naze.
