Long walk from Suffolk Yacht Harbour to Levington. Better to use Shotley Point Marina and either the Shipwreck or the Bristol Arms. Besides, Shotley's got real baths!

I beg to disagree.
When you walk there:-
a) You are sober
b) its uphill
c) likely to be light so you can see how far it is.
Coming back:-
a) you have a rounded suffiency of intoxicant
b) Its downhill, whether your remember or not
c) its dark, and you can see the glow, which doesnt change much untill you step back into the yard near your bedspace
Its also arguably even better food than the Shipwreck, although at parity if you consider price.

I agree the Blackwater is a fine river with lots to see and do, and also contains my current all time favourite destination, Brightlingsea. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Eh?????
Brightlingsea is on the Colne, not the Blackwater.
No-one's mentioned West Mersea and Tollesbury yet - it is considered compulsory to visit the Company Shed in Mersea for the seafood. Do go up the Blackwater into Heybridge Basin, which is an interesting diversion with a couple of pubs to go at. I also like Bradwell, for a number of reasons not the least being the pub. Orwell is great to explore, right up to Ipswich.
Would second the comment about avoiding the Wallet in wind-over-tide conditions - only time ever my family has been seasick.
I think the main attraction is the sheer sense of open space and peace on the East Coast - curlews in the evening, the smell and sound of the mud drying out on the tide, the glorious sunsets and big skies. It certainly got under my skin when we started sailing there.
Tuck yourself up into some quiet anchorage on any of the rivers and just enjoy it.
Wells and Blakeney are both good
Avoid G Yarmouth
Great clubhouse at RNSYC at Lowestoft
Then Southwold
Aldeburgh
Woodbridge
Pin Mill
Mistley
etc if you have time
Wouldn't recommend Southwold. Ok slightly prejudiced as the only time I went in I had to tie up on the quay and lay awake all night as the boat yawed and strained to its warps as 6 knots of boiling swirling ebb rushed beneath us.
I enjoy the occasional trip to Ipswich if looking for a night out. Cinema complex, pubs clubs etc. I think Neptune marina used to have a snooker table but the price you pay for that is it's on the noisey side of the harbour and a quiter night is spent in Ipswich Haven.

Its a lovely walk from SYH to Levington in the summer either by road or along the river. I've only visited Shotley once and I'm not in a rush to go back - the Shipwreck reminded me of the sort of pub that was to be found in holiday camps & big campsites in the mid 1980's - pretty tacky with bland food, all from the deep fryer
Brightlingsea is a gem. HM and his team will meet you and take you to your berth. Depending on when you visit the water taxi may or may not be running. Easter to October it runs Fri evenings and all day Sat and Sun to 10 or 11pm. In School Summer Hols it runs 7 days a week. Just changed hands so assume the new owner will continue as before. If you like curry visit the Kovolam or however it is spelt, just a stagger from the quay.
If you have time go to Heybridge Basin up the Blackwater and lock in. The Ship Inn is great and I believe (not done it) you can take your dunghy up the canal to Maldon and tie up next to Tesco / Morrisons or whichever to do the shopping!
Can't think of anywhere I wouldn't go other than home! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You certainly can take your dunghy up the canal, to Tescos. It's quite a long way, best with an outboard! Almost makes shopping fun........
