I'm going off sailing with a mate over the weekend, usually only do day sails. Have just moved the boat to Manningtree and am wondering how far we could get on Saturday, up the Deben perhaps ?. Boat is an e-boat but we tend to sail for pleasure rather than racing. Any ideas of decent moorings ??

If this is your first sail from Manningtree I would not be over ambitious as you will have to cope with the tidal restrictions of your moorings. I would suggest a trip round to the Walton Backwaters or up the Orwell. Unless you go into a marina you will need to dinghy ashore. It is worth buying one of the East Coast guides. I would have a trip up the Orwell to Pin Mill.

Welcome to the East Coast. have a look at the East Coast forum further down the main index page.

Yup, agree completely with MrCramp...

You can grab moorings in both the Walton Backwaters or at Pin Mill (the Pin Mill ones are easier, as there are proper visitors moorings, whereas the Backwaters ones are permanent holders moorings)

Alternatively, if tides look unfavourable, and something a bit closer to hom makes more sense, then the buoys off West Mersea are good too, and its a nice run ashore to the island...

Also, MrCramp is spot on with his advice to buy the East Coast pilot, its a bit of a bible for east coast sailors, isn't expensive, and contains a great deal of valuable local knowledge.

Not sure the bouys at West Mersea are closer to Manningtree (or hom, wherever that is), than Walton or Pin Mill!!

Maningtree is up the Stour from Mistley and the channel up there is little different depth-wise than Foundary Creek running up to the Walton on the Naze Yacht Club.

I assume you would need to leave Manningtree at high water , or just after. You would get to Harwich in less than 2 hours and would have to fight the ebb tide down past Clacton. Perhaps you could stop for a bit at Harwich and then take the flood down the coast. Returning from West Mersea you would want to take the ebb tide and then the flood up the Stour, perhaps anchoring for a bit if you run out of water on the Stour.

Have a good weekend, the forcast looks HOT!
