East coast cycle one sunday

Mind you, you were brave getting a fixed bike - I wouldn't dream of it! I like my knees too much.

A single fixed gear bike is the reason I have a pair of dodgy knees. Maybe more suitable for the track or the flat lands of the east than the Cotswolds.

If I come to the Fitted up supper on the ferry, I'll bring the Mercian with me.

Sorry to hear that Shmoo!

Get well soon.

Thanks.

I always used to ride fixed as kid: I commuted from Clapham to Islington for 7 or 8 years in the sixties on one. What clinched it when choosing the new one was my current commute goes Home -> Cross town -> portage on train (over two footbridges) -> cross town. -> work So I needed light, reliable and robust with a bit of sprint.

Not me. No sir!

I have a dead trike today. Went out riding with a chum over Danbury Hill and then we were heading off towards Goldhanger when my rear mech hanger bent and it all went horribly wrong. Had to be rescued by Dad in his car to take me to my car (which was parked at Rettendon) to drive back and pick up my trike from the pub garage (in which it was being stored) as it doesn't fit in Dad's car. That was about 100 miles of driving (for Dad and I) for 12.5 miles of cycling. Oh well. New mech hanger should arrive in the post today FOC from the trike manufacturer.

Ok, how about a poll to see who can do which dates.

I'll see if I can work the poll thingy on this version of vBulletin...

Er... no. It seems I can't add a poll. Moondancer, can you add one to the original post that started this thread, giving a bunch of Sunday dates and the ability to vote for more than one item? then we can see what suits everyone the best.

Dates .

Can't do a poll so:

reponses for

1) 14th March
2) 21 mARCH
3) 28 mARCH
4) 4 aPRIL

I can do any of these but my favorite would be 14th March.

14 March - Can do but I'll have done a 50 miler the day before so may be slow!
21 March - Can do but I'll have done a 55 miler the day before so may be slow!
28 March - can't do
4 April - Can do but I'll have done a 50 miler the day before so may be slow!

Shall we say March 21st then?

Are people OK for the ride to start from Manningtree Railway Station?

We could do a pootle around the Shotley Peninsula for about 30 miles (lunch in Shotley?) or a trip to Wrabness/Walton Naze Tower and back for about 40 miles (lunch at the Naze tower)? The roads are less busy for the second option. Do people want to go further afield? If so we could also visit Brightlingsea on the second option and that would make it 50 miles.

March the 21st it is.. any preferred time?

I like the last of the options... Manningtree to the Naze, via Brightlingsea would be really nice.... 50 miles is enough distance to make the trip down to Essex worthwhile, and a cake stop at Brightlingsea would be lovely!

Sounds good, assuming the rest are OK with it.

It'll be a 100 mile weekend for me on the bike. And I don't like that hill in and out of Brightlingsea either!!

I've plotted a route on BikeRouteToaster so you can see what I am thinking of as a route: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=106573 . There will be a small amount of route overlapping as it can't be avoided really (after all, there's only one way in and out of Brightlingsea).

Let me know if this appeals to all. It's 53ish miles.

I might chop the Wrabness to Ramsey bit off as the roads aren't so pleasant when you've gone past Wrabness - cutting down from Bradfield to Wix is rather pleasanter; it'll knock about 5 miles off the route which might help me as I have an extra 10 to get to and from Manningtree anyway and may be rather knackered from the day before.

I'll do a recce of the route over the next week or two and see what the roads are like - we're pothole alley round here at the moment.

The Naze tower is a good tea and cake stop; not sure about Brightlingsea Lunch stop - Kovalam perhaps? Curry at lunchtime not a good idea?

The other issue is start time. Could people get to Manningtree for 10am or is that a bit tricky with the distance to get there? Manningtree Railway Station does the most fantastic breakfasts and I will undoubtedly partake of one.

10 is fine for me.... i'll be down on Morgana the night before, so only a few miles away... I too may ride down from Shotley rather than leave the car at Manningtree if you shorten the route slightly, as this start/finish adds 26 miles overall for me..

Secondly, not sure about a curry at lunchtime.. perhaps a bit much if we've still got a good few miles to go!!!.... perhaps Fish and Chips might be easier on the stomach?
