The Cannon was made on my myford lathe from a 2ins length of scrap SS shaft, the carriage or truck from the removed Horn timber from Mercia III It is set up to represent a pre 1840s and a post 1850 flint lock it only fires blanks the balls are for show only but very impressive. It is for the boat when we get her back in the water. I don't know the legal bit but we have a bill of sale dated 1947 and it states the sale of Mercia III with all her armament and ammunition.
I seam to remember a certain chap by the name of Street and a book across the Atlantic with Street. He boasted his boat was a 40ft with a mussel firing Cannon.
The ss shaft was used as a dolly for all the rivets we put in when we re ribbed about 1500 in total. So I thought it appropriate to make something for the boat out of it.
Now you have got me thinking, I have a Myford, and a milling machine! Hmmmmm A swivel bow chaser for the pulpit! YEAH! me likes! About 2" bore should do it, just the job for wakin' up an anchorage full of sleepy mobo jockies!
Tee-Heeeeee, /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Hmmmm, could be a lot of brown trousers? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
If you get in touch with the peeps who run the "Mathew" at Bristol next to The 'Great Britain' they may be able to help with the legals bit. There is a way to do it.
Yes, Don Street had one on Iolaire - I was onboard one day summer '95 in the Solent off Cowes - it was some classic yacht regatta, and no wind, so we drifted down with the tide, and got a tow back to Cowes later (Iolaire has no engine). My memory of that day out is a bit blurred, as there were lots of drinkies on board.... but I am pretty sure that Don fired a couple of broadsides at potential boarders.....
Smiffy, if you mount a cannon on your pulpit, and sail out to the Windies, you will find much work from folk keen to commission you to obliterate pesky jet-skis and wave-runners - I think a Smiffy cannonette would do the job very well...... and just think, you would be providing a public service, while getting paid..... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Sorry, not to pick holes in your spelling, but a certain imagery came to mind. Are we talking about a cannon that fires shellfish? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Or just a cannon without a breach? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I think Mussels at about 400 FPS, would be quite effective? Even for Jetskis Martin? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Ummm yes, I am sure that some nice rough mussels at 400 fps will be most effective against jetskis!
We shall look forward to your Nomad's arrival in the Windies, and I shall start to take bookings for your Nomadic cannon services.....
Ouch yes thanks Big_Southern_Jesse for the pick up.
"a muzzle loading cannon" would have been more appropriate.
But never mind it raised a giggle and that pleases me.
Just gone back and checked on my post and partly the point I was making is a cannon can be made and be legal as long as it fires blanks and doses not emit from the muzzle. It is not classed as a firearm. Don Street had a live firing cannon and I can only think he must have had a licence for it.
Any one know the law on cannons.

Naaaa, would do bookings, I likes the element of surprise! Anyway, why stop at Jetskis? AWBs seem to me to be just as legitemate a target!
Now come on you lot, enough humour, it will never do you know, we are being watched, so no more humour on here , we have the lounge for that.
This forum is for the serious discussion of matters pertaining to classic and vintage boaty things!
