If he was at JSASTC and its the person I think you mean I have sailed with him and sailed in company with him. Haven't seen him for years though. I also sent him some pictures (at his request) for his rewrite of a well known Pilot book and singularly failed to get into print - obviously my photography is not up to much.
There are lots of words for different things and the same thing on a boat. To some extent it depends where you come from and who you have sailed with.
The problems only come when you think that YOUR WORD is the right one. Sometimes it is, but sometimes someone else can be just as right.
I don't like using the word 'board' for a period of time on one tack - but its a recognised term on the East coast.
