EA Navigation charges to rise by 6.4%

Presume those increases also apply to the Medway and 100% yes to the rolling year.
Looks as though they have also taken into consideration that there are indeed other revenue streams out there that could contribute to spread the financial load a little.
Would very much like to know if the water companies/farms etc are paying a going rate for water extraction, or is it as I suspect, some historic peppercorn pittance set 20 or 30 years ago as agreed with the old public water companies and and now held on to with much glee by the privatised outfits ?

Hmnnn, I suspect you could be right, OG.

You probably alreadcy know, but if you email the EA and ask them this very question, they are legally bound to answer it for you (Freedom of Information and all that jazz)...

No they pay in accordance with the national charging scheme http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/regulation/38809.aspx

Interesting, because in a recent TV programme, concerning the over extraction of water from the various ancient aquifers that supply some of our rivers,a spokesman for one of the water companies stated that some old historic agreements were preventing the water companies from restricting exploitation of ground water together with the fact is was cheaper to pump water out of the aquifers than to build resevoirs or construct cross county water pipes.

Ah, yes,but

The EA have announced that Navigation charges will rise by 6.4% from 1st January 2012.

The commercial users have had a result; fees frozen until 2015!
I know they pay more but then again they use the river more.:(

Their numbers and outings have dropped markedly in recent years.

To my mind they are an important feature to make more folk aware of the River.

Oh you just know that will be like.. ZERO?... (could be wrong?)

As the notice says the increase applies to navigation charges I would expect the same increase to apply for unpowered vessels. Fishing licences are decided on a different basis but I will be surprised if comparable increases are not applied.

I believe I am right in saying that commercial craft - hire boats, trip boats etc - pay 1.8 times the basic class N powered craft (non-hire) rates.

Confirmed that the 6.4% increase applies to ALL registration charges, other than commercial craft, including unpowered - that includes rowboats, Apollo !

Navigation charges for commercial craft have been frozen at 2011 levels until 2015 but they do already pay a 1.8 multiple on standard rate for same sized vessel.

Fishing to be announced later I understand.

Registration packs for 2012 should start being sent out during week commencing 21st November. EA are asking that people respond early to avoid the sort of problems they had this year. They also point out that the registration plate for 2012 should be on the boat and visible from 1st January !

Shame they're not offering an incentive for prompt/early renewals.....or a penalty for late ones beyond a given date.

My course fishing licence was about £28.00 pounds last year, wihch works out at about £14.00 per fish by my reckoning.
My chum who has a game licence pays around £70.00 for 8 month licence.
