EA is failing in its responsobilities regarding lock starcases.

Just had a word with the resident at Days about how nice his steps are.

He just uses hot water and a brush. Sorted.

But to be fair Days does not have metal grids. They are more awkward to clean. And the are very very slippery.


I wonder if the steps are in fact for boaters. The ladders on canal locks are for emergency egress of people who fall into the lock chamber rather than being specifically for boaters to use.

I think the Thames stairwells probably were put in for boat use though.

Some locks are definitely cleaner than others. Hurley certainly was earlier this year. Always worth complimenting the Lock keeper when they make such an effort

I had the job of arranging for the last 25 tubs of caustic soda to be removed from Shepperton Nav office boat shed. They were taken away to be destroyed at some fanciful cost to the pubic purse. There has been no investigation into the use of other lock chamber cleaning options to my knowledge.

What other nav authority cleans lock chamber walls these days? CRT certainly doesn't.

This stuff is dolphin-friendly or whatever the correct phrase is.
