i am about to clean install xp, the problem is that as i use windows outlook it isnt straight forward to move / save all folders & info. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

why the hell cant you "save all " on another drive GRRRRRRRRRR /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

i have saved contacts to another drive but its tedious to do that to each file seperatly. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

i prefer outlook ( or willing to try another system, but not my isp i like the full contacts details of outlook)

any input greatfully accepted /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

thanks in advance /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
a confused sailorman ( on mini digger all day, not sailing /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif)

ps have down-loaded mozilla to look at

In Outlook, if you go to File... Import and Export... Export to a File... Personal Folder File (.pst), then you'll get your whole Outlook contents in one file.

Bingo.

For email client then Mozilla Thunderbird takes a lot of beating. I sync the client with the server so I can use either of the two laptops we have. So backup is minimal as two environments are always up to date. Has better features than MS Outlook and import to Tbird is straightforward.

If you don't sync client and server then Mozbackup looks after the client backups for you.

yes but you have to click import from another program or file, which is confusing as you would imagine being outlooks own file it would be simpler.

The only thing it does not do (or not for me anyway) is repropogate the outlook bar or save your filters if you use them. I do not know if there is a way to save the filters in outlook, anyone?

Do make sure you have all your info to hand, your log ins etc, it will not save the account details either.

prior to saving it might also be a good time to compact your pst file, they can shrink from 30 odd megs down to 2 or 3 if you have never done this before.

right click on the root of your folder list (outlook today) - properties for outlook today - advanced - compact.

Worth checking the folder size before and after, you might be shocked.

It grows even if you delete regularly, outlook does not delete the files from your pst file, just from view, security I expect, compact removes all your previously deleted files.

You can store your outlook.pst anywhere you like, companies have theirs on the servers so you can log into your email anywhere on site.

I have mine on my main machine, but my small laptop uses the same file as the main one (main one acting as server), so my email is the same whichever machine I am on. This does mean I have to have my main on to get email.

You can fit hard drives to home networks for stuff like this, I saw a case for one in maplin I think for around 30 squids.

OK, I'm no expert but - just a thought as I was in a similar position last year. I bought a SanDisk CruzerPro flash drive that has a synchronisation program built in. When you plug it into your PC it ask which programs you want to synch, then copies the entire contents onto the 1Gb drive, which is sectored into two drives for programs and data. This then allows me to go to any other PC, plug in my stick and it effectively 'becomes' my own PC for the program stored. I use it for email (Outlook) and it is very useful. Only thing is it uses its own 'minimised' version of Outlook, but all the Outlook data is on it. When I plug it back into my home PC it updates it with everything I changed whilst I was away using other machines, provided (obviously) I used Outlook through the stick for my email.
For your info it is around £19 from www.picstop.co.uk.

thats nifty
i only ever use the same pc really. i just need to format the "C" drive & save all the outlook data.i have exported all as Dogwatch suggested.
next time i reload outlook is it poss to tell it to install onto another drive thereby saving all this messing about

It is not Outlook which you need to install on another drive, but all the data which Outlook uses. You can switch at any time. Options, Mail Setup, Data Files, Settings. It will involve a stop and start of Outlook for the change to bite. First take a copy of the current datafile, put the copy onto your other disk, then point at it in Settngs. You MAY have to start a new datafile depending on version of Outlook, but you can import your old data. So if your system disk fails, your data is all sitting there nicely, and now you know where it is, you can back it up more easily. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh, and while you are at it, you can set up where the archive is (same disk as datafile), so you dont lose that either. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

EDIT: Sorry, just checked, it isnt quite as easy as I said. Without going into detail, you have to retain the old default datafile, but can create a new one whereever you want, and then redirect all mail to the inbox associated with the new datafile... oops..at least I checked /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Better than Export

You dont really want to export, you want a backup. this link will enable you to download the proper backup tool. It reminds you every n days whether you want a backup, and part of the setup is where to put it.

Plus if you install the Mozilla Lightning Extension you get all the calnedar features of Outlook too.

thanks to all
hopefully fully backed-up
sent Vista Voucher off to-day ( free upgrade ) .
i have been told the Vista is an "up-grade" on XP but will wait till the disc arrives & take a view as they say rather than load the new XP disc now & again on change to Vista

thanks again one & all ( some by email /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Personally I use Eudora .... it can be installed anywhere on any drive and when you have troubles ... zip it up ... save to a cd etc. Do what you want with PC ... install new copy of Eudora and overwrite with saved copy ... all settings, filters, accounts intact ......

Oh and a feature that is so much better than any MS offering ... ALL attachments are in a special separate folder - so no hunting down temp directorys etc. All in proper names as per attched, all useable without having to have Outlook play ...

Outlook ?? Can't understand why it's still around .... IMHO !!
