Very suspect. How much is the phone actually worth?
Possibly an attempt to get your Paypal account details and con you in to posting the phone to an address in Africa.

Could be.
Below is an example of a paypal ebay phone scam

"was selling my Used phone on Ebay, and immediately got many many offers seeming almost too good to be true. Basically the scam goes like this...
You list a phone (or whatever) on Ebay.
You get asked a question from a potential bidder using Ebay offering to buy your phone immediately for a substantial amount of money. (Several hundred pounds)
Or they bid on your item for a ridiculous amount of money
You reply saying yes that would be fine - please pay using paypal. (what could possibly go wrong)
You get an email from ''Paypal'' stating that you have new funds in your account - the shipping address and that for extra security, before the funds appear on your paypal account they require a tracking number.
Call me stupid but I almost fell for this, realising at the last minute that things didn''t stack up.

If you are not already aware of this scam, please watch out for it. All the emails look real. If you do get one I advice you to forward it too either:

spoof@paypal.com
or
spoof@ebay.co.uk"

The scam is probably that if you accept you'll receive payment for, say, £500 and then be asked to refund the balance. They won't accept paypal from you so get your bank details that way.

Keep well clear IMHO - if it looks too good to be true it probably is: £250 for an old mobile phone!?!

Possible scam but wouldn't be a problem to give your paypal id. If payment is done, ship the item and you're ok.

What exactly are you sceptical about?

Not 100% true as if the buyer makes his paypal payment via paypal he can disbute it at a later date and if he asks his CC Co to deny payment the seller will have the money withdrawn from his account.

Seeing as it's shipping abroad a claim via the courts then becomes very difficult.

My moto....
If it's too good to be true it is!

Sister in law just said same as you. She also nearly fell for it, She e-mailed buyer who wanted tracking number before allowing funds to clear. To get that, parcel had to have been sent. Paypal notified and advised not to send product.

What i meant is to clear the payment getting cash through paypal and afterwards send the item. That way everything should be fine.

If buyer does not accept that no item gets shipped /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

PayPal will not allow payment from most African counrties and it only became available in South Africa about a year ago.

Do you know which African country rose is in?

IMHO keep well away and that is from some one who lives and works in Africa.

Firstly.... taking the money out of your Paypal account does not stop Paypal taking it back. They will simply freeze your account and point out the small print that allows them to get the funds back from you via your registered payment method.

As for clearing the funds.... I wonder how long you have to wait? How long before your credit card company says it's too late for you to discpute a payment you made..

Honest I am speaking from experience!!!!!!

I rest my case then as long as i 've only completed couple of successful transactions through e-bay and paypal...

You might find that once they have your email address you will receive emails with links to virus loaded pages. You are worth targeting as you have active ebay and Paypal accounts

I would be very wary of sending large ticket items abroad it's very easy for them complain and Paypal will freeze your money until they decide the buyer is in the right. If you doubt me, do a Google for Paypal scam fraud etc.

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is a total scam! DO NOT fall for it. It is the latest in Scamster PLC skullduggery. These scammers average 2 to 3 "Numpties" per 100 emails - that is a great return rate for very little effort.

Mick,

Like others have said, it reads like a scam, so it probably is.

I assume they have contacted you via ebay, and not your email address?

You can either ignore it completely, or send a pleasant reply saying that you dont end auctions early.

How much is the phone really worth? What is Rose ebay ID? How many feedbacks does she have? How long has she been registered with ebay? What has she bought/sold recently? Where is she registered? If she has sold stuff, where has the location been, and is it always the same?

Always useful to look these things up if you have any suspicions on ebay, particularly if seling or buying more expensive stuff.

If I'm buying expensive stuff, I often ask if I can collect and pay cash... if they refuse, it adds to the suspicion, if they agree, you can always change your mind and ask them to post it.

Cheers all, Thankfully my personal e-mail not revealed. 'Rose' sent her request without it appearing in the 'Q' part of the add, I have now posted it along with a suitable (Still polite) reply. Have more to worry about at moment having discovered one of my spinnakers has just been inadvertently used to soak up several litres of Hydraulic oil. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
