Just about to install new seacocks to new skin fittings and tails. The ISIS DZR ball valve doesn’t Show a direction of flow. Which way round should it go. Skin fitting the writing/band side or hose tail?
There is no flow direction, the usual method is to install with the handle pointing away from the hull (when inline as in this picture).
One other tip, to orient the valve handle correctly the use of a locking nut is handy - otherwise you are at the mercy of wherever the handle is oriented when it is threaded up tight.
Orientation can matter. Plenty of sea cocks have handles which only work one way once the body is screwed in because the nib on the handle has to face the correct side. The handles can then foul in one orientation and not the other.
On modern shallow bilge boats there is sometimes no option but to put a 90 degree elbow at the skin fitting. The leverage applied by the sea cock to the skin fitting is much less if the handle lies over the elbow rather than at the opposite end. If the valve gets stiff then it can apply a lot of torque to the skin fitting and has been known to loosen it!
