Dylan Winter

Does Leo sail on the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea?

Well done, sir. A masterclass in how to point out a minor error without being abusive, while simultaneously being amusing and displaying erudition.
(For anyone who knows llareggub about what I mean, the clue is Under Milk Wood.)

Dylan told us he was broke. and a lot more. at the same time as this was moving in to a lovelly house.

Not quite. He told us that he was not prepared to spent any of his own money on sailing, which was a commercial project and had to be funded entirely by revenue it generated. That's absolutely fine - I don't fund my own work either. Nobody on a BBC salary and who makes £300k+ profit from a house move could be described as skint.

Thank you. It was an entertaining mistake!

Thoroughly enjoyed all DWs videos, my choice of boats and type of boating was frequently the butt of his barbed comments.
Problem was, 99% of his observations were not far off the mark.

Things and people move on. Deal with it. ?

Originally anyone would get share of advert money for videos, albeit a small amount. YouTube raised the threshold a year or so ago meaning most smalltime video makers dropped below the level and YouTube kept all the revenue for themselves. It's quite a hurdle to get over
Dylan seems to have been making £1000 a month, or close to it, when he was cut off in 2010.

He was cut off allegedly because his fans were engaging in click-fraud:

I did get the odd subscriber sending me an email saying that he had clicked loads of adverts. This is called demon clicking. I would reply that I would prefer them to only click on adverts they were interested in.

I allow my subscribers to leave comments on the films. If one of them mentioned clicking on adverts to show their appreciation – well it’s a nice gesture, but I would edit their posting to remove the mention.

This has been discussed here a number of times before. It is a shame that he was demonetised, because it seems like the income would have been enough to support KeepTurningLeft.

Ok, I enjoyed Dylan Winter’s Keep Turning Left series and on the strength of these contacted him through YBW and asked if he’d be interested in a doing an after dinner talk at our yacht club.

He replied and said that wasn’t his thing but an informal buffet and film night could work.

An evening was arranged in the depths of January, it sold out easily and Dylan was excellent. He refused all forms of accommodation, opting for the cushions from his boat laid in the back of his VW Passat estate.

We agreed a fee that was significantly less than a yachting journalist (obviously not TC....that previously gave the most boring showing of his holiday/family photos while mumbling ‘This is Dad and me in Queenborough....’ into the microphone) and after an excellent evening didn’t want to take the very reasonable sum agreed as he wanted the club to get value for money from his visit.

He’d be welcome back.

Yes, that seems to have been the point where it turned tricky. U-tube cut him off with no appeal. Sounded a bit unfair. KTL was good stuff.

He Seen a genuine guy to me, as I said before I not seen much of his stuff , or had any thing to do with the going on some time back here
Agree he must had piss some off here , but I don't think people should keep running the guy down .
It seen he was trying to make a living out of filming some thing he enjoyed , it also seen to me why people where getting if for free they where happy to watch but as soon as he asked people to pay to watch he became scam .
When I have more time on my hands and back in a house with a tv and plenty of data , I hope his stuff is still about to watch , I also be happy to pay to watch something that interesting to me rather then pay BBC to watch the same old rubbish
Live and let live .

I went to quite some trouble trying to get Dylan a new or refurbished engine for his ' Slug ' Mirror Offshore, gave him books and got sod all thanks - then later insults both direct to my father who was on my boat when he called then myself online for having a 100:1 outboard.

I'm reminded of the people who do bucket list parachute jumps or long distance hikes, sailing trips, racing cars or motorbikes ' please fund my hobby '

BTW I could do with a She 36, marina berth and new rig if you could be so kind, cheques to Seajet

Let's be fair , he was given something back in return and many really enjoyed it , even once here who are complaining now .
he wasn't just asking for money for nothing .
Any way no one was force to pay , they didn't have to watch his films .
Again I say it all was fine while it was free ,
I'm all for free stuff but if that free stuff stop and I had to pay , I'm not going to start going on about it .

It's bad marketing, particularly when one shows extraordinary sensitivity to criticism oneself. I doubt if anyone was induced to pay towards Mr Winter's family holidays (he wanted a boat big enough for himself, his wife, their two adult sons and the family dog) by being called a "refusenik".

...

I got the impression that he seemed pretty happy with his Minstrel, but wanted something a bit more substantial to cross the Pentland Firth. The family holiday seemed to be a by-product of the Centaur rather than its purpose. It made some good videos anyway.

Nobody can please everybody and each their own. I liked the videos and understand the amount of work that went into them. His grouching about his prejudices amused me - maybe I share some of them.

I’ve chipped in for Dylan’s videos a few times because I enjoy watching them, and I’m set up to pay something to Leo for the Tally Ho videos each time they are published, because I’m in awe of what he’s doing and his ability to do it and make interesting videos; what are you offering?

Tally Ho has got its monetary house in order.

He gets hundreds of thousands of views on his site and you can just donate or sign up to Patreon.

Once the boat has been finished and sailed back across the pond I’m sure it will fetch a very good price and he’ll deserve every penny of it.

There is a lesson in here somewhere.

Despite the recurrent negative theme this thread has had 5,500 views. He obviously marketed himself exceptionally well - recalling the adage - there is no such thing as bad advertising.

Who would have thought.

Ten of those are probably me yet I don’t know the man and have never watched one of his videos.

I suppose to keep the post count low (which might prove “something “ to you) I could just wait until things cool down and have one view.

I “patronise” three people, Leo, Nike and Techmoan. I enjoy their videos and never felt I HAD to contribute.

This guy seems to demand it.

Oops.

That’ll be at least two more views, me to post, you to read.

You’re right.

He’s fascinating :encouragement:

I can't speak for anyone else, of course, but I have no objection at all to Mr Winter, or anyone else, soliciting contributions in exchange for the enjoyment of watching films.

But to be 'commercially successful', the project has to engage with a sufficient number of people who in return are willing to provide the income required.

Simple economics.

I've been sufficiently enamoured by the Tally Ho saga and quite a few 'Tips from a Shipwright' to support both, but KTL left me cold.
It's a crowded market.

Of course. With the benefit of not having tried to do it myself, I think Mr WInter's error was to move from an engaging corner of the market ("grumpy old man sails very cheap boat up every creek he comes to") to one which was not only much more crowded ("Watch my music video of the Scottish coast") but which was very also much more expensive to produce. Hurling abuse at potential funders was a bad move too, as was the hint of exploitation. Two Centaurs donated and then sold, the Mirror repaired for free and then promptly sold ...

No ones complaining, thier giving an opinion. If someone was knocking on your door for cash and they painted a misleading picture of the facts you might have a different opinion. you might not. He also abused forum rules for his own financial gain. was happy to put others down for trying to get a better deal. it was all right for him though.

quite frankly who cares anymore. Im all right, hes all right and most people have moved on. If he wants a bloody fisher he can put his hand in his pocket like everyone else. life owes no one anything.

Is that fair ?
