This film was made by one of our best documentary filmmakers, Bert Haanstra. Winner of an Oscar for a short film about the glass industry 50 years ago. 'Skutsjesilen', as we call it, is still immensely popular in The Netherlands. Especially in the province of Friesland, where every town has its own 'skutsje' (barge), and races eachother.
These barges are so developed, that they will easily outrun a modern yacht. Sinkings happen regularly, because these ships have no keels, and they are sailed in the races to the edge.
