Dusseldorf Mega Post -Part 2

Thanks, Brian, that's interesting. One of the selling points of IPS/Zeus is the joystick control so you would think that something similar would be marketed for shaftdrive boats if the technology is already available. Any idea why Sealine/Brunswick binned it?
Would it have been a retrofit for some boats?

I think the failure was a time period ( to early ) marketing not well sold, change of ownership,

It was a resonable simple retro fit.

The engine control was unplug cable from throttle lever, plug into unit, plug unit into throttle lever.

Bow / stern thruster was tap into thruster control system, about a hours work for a leccy.

More work on fitting control unit.

It also had the advatage of no micros, so no odd glitches.

When I put development into coldstore around 2004, I had a wireless hand held unit in hand, allowing you to control the boat from the shore if you wanted.

Must have alook at whats in cold store, see what else may be of interest to-day.

Azimut I think or who did it for them patented the system, which I think is the same used for IPS, the joystick is very similar
before Azimut there was a US builder of lobster and picnic boats who introduced the joystick first, but that was on jet propulsion
I am not sure it was Hinckley, if it was not it is similar to them

Azimut told me at the time for the joystick you need the stern thruster

I don't think most bow thrusters could stop a boat from turning with one engine in fwd, and one astern, so if you wanted the boat to go sideways the control would have to cycle the engines in and out of gear whilst keeping the bowthruster on. Maybe that's not feasible or desirable, which is why they need the stern thruster?

Just a guess.

Re. joystick on a twin engines shaft boat with bow and stern thrusters, pah!
Reminds me of catch 22: whoever have problems to maneuver such boat, can ask to have also the joystick.
But who make such request, shouldn't be allowed to helm the boat at all.

Hey, Mapis you're not hlb in disguise are you?

Jez, great stuff. Bet it was cheaper and easier to get to Dusseldorf than Docklands?
