What exactly is brightwork?

Stuff that's metal & meant to be shiny (think of Bronze fittings, Brass Bell, SS stanchions).

Brightwork includes varnish and yer brass, (shiny bits).

Quite right, I forgot the varnish - don't have any on mine (varnished steel looks funny & the mast's painted).

Obviously not a Dumb stupid question

I never realised it includes varnished stuff. Really? I am sure chemicals for metal variously allowed/named most metal and other "brightwork" which i didn't take to include varnished wood. I mean, the insides of lots of new powerboats is varnished but nobody wd ever rub them with chemicals, just wipe witha damp cloth.
