Duck tape : Adhesive removal

Removed the glue residue from "blasting tape" on the hull of my boat. Blasting tape has an adhesive which makes most duct tapes look as if they don't have any glue. Desolvit dissolved the glue in seconds with no possibility of harm to the gelcoat.

Methylated spirits is a very good general purpose sticky stuff remover, without being as harsh as cellulose thinners. Whilst thinners gets anything off, it can also affect the gel coat or most certainly paintwork, whereas meths will just remove the sticky stuff.

Just about every solvent known to man has been suggested. I'm sure one will work but I wouldn't let Acetone or MEK near most plastics, they dissolve the plastic and leave an opaque mess, with cracks if it's bad. I don't know about cellulose thinners but wouldn't try it on an expensive hatch without trying on something else first.

The oily ones (eucalyptus, citrus) may work with grease (elbow). I would polish it off, it'll take a while if it's dried on like the stuff I botched a repair to my car bumper with.

On my recent Atlantic crossing my new Lewmar Oecan 60 forehatch leaked, whenever water came over the foredeck. The solution I chose was to use duck tape to seal the hatch, and this worked; no more water through the hatch seals.

However the tape has peeled away leaving the tape adhesive stuck to the aluminum and gelcoat. What is the best method to remove the "goo" without damage to hatch or deck ?? Is there a wonder spary on wipe off cleaner that will work ?

Mike
For future reference, push the tape back on the adhesive and then warm it all up well with a hot air gun, slowly remove tape and adhesive will come with it. If adhesive is left behind, replace tape and repeat hot air gun - takes time but has proven to be fool-proof - so far! ! !
