I've recently fitted a new rear seal on my gearbox in an attempt to cure an oil leak. Changing the seals was no problem, however a couple of points I'd welcome advice on. The large nut holding the flange on the drive shaft came away rather too easily I thought. On reassembly, I began tightening this nut, but then reached a stage where I was unable to put the box into neutral - went from forward straight to reverse when shifting the gear lever. Loosened it all off again and tightened to a point where neutral position had the desired effect. Now, though I've still got oil seeping past the drive shaft nut (not past the seal) It looks as though that's where the original leak was from, as the old oil seal seemed to be in good nick. The nut sits on top of a large dished washer, below which was a broken O-ring, which I replaced.
Questions -
1/ How tight does this nut have to be?
2/ Is it normal to have an o-ring as a seal in this position? The original and the replacement look to be of too thin a material to have any sealing properties - should I try a thicker one?
3/ I can move the rear flange about 1mm side to side when tightened - is this too much freeplay (worn bearings perhaps?)
thanks
