I have a twin engine flybridge cruiser and am having problems adjusting the control cables. The controlls are morse SL3, one is new the other is original (16 yrs old??)and the DS change over units are Volvo and new. Go ahead on the Stb control moves gear shift end on outdrive ok, back to neutral and the cable lines up with the neutral on the gear shift, go to reverse and back into neutral and the cable end is about 1/2" short of the neutral position on the gear shift. Go ahead and back to neutral again and it all lines up. Cant work out what is happening, any one got any clues or silver bullets.
Regards,
Eddie

I have had a similar problem Eddie.
If the Volvo DS unit is the same as my last one, the alignment procedure is to insert 8mm dowels (I used bolts) into 2 holes on the DS unit face plate. This locks the unit in nuetral. The gear selector (butterfly type plate on the outdrive) should be exaxtly horizontal (neutral). Adjust the cable for neutral, and ensure that the backlash is shared equally between Fwd and Rev. Now lock off the adjusters on this cable, - you shouldnt need to move this again. Remove the dowels, and adjust cables for correct lever operation.
This sounds more complex than it really is.
Hope this helps.

Good Luck
Alastair

check also that your cables are connected in the correct hole in the gear arm on the control
there are various holes to suit different gear selections which alter the stroke as required

Alistair,
Thanks for the reply. Had gone through the set up procedure but missed out the bit about sharing backlash. Been down today with the enginner and it looks like the cables need replacing cause no amount of adjusting is fixing it. Also all seems smooth until the drives are attached and then the gear change is very stiff.
I am fitting new cables next week and see how I get on.

Regards,
Eddie
